Today we moved camera 1 into the control room (as opposed to in the studio facing in). It allowed us to get more rock, and catch Tavis cutting bass on his tracks.
We cut two more floor tracks, for "Pieces of You" and "Day You Left" Setup was the same as yesterday, with the only change being the addition of the Avalon U5 DI for bass when we cut tracks in the control room. We took the DI out of the classic SVT tube head into an API pre and split the direct pickup signal through the U5.
We got Tavis' bass cut on the intro and first song, but by the time we got to the third tune, he was drunk off his ass. Seriously. While he was tracking, he fell out of his chair at one point. twice. (note to self:keep Tavis away from red wine) The takes were still better than about 85% of the bass players I work with, but not nearly good enough for this sweet record.
We got some seriously sweet drum tones, though. The bass tones are equally incredible. Seriously. Everyone else making records in a 500 mile radius is screwed. All in all, a really sweet day. Day 1 was 12 hours of tracking, yesterday was 10, even with my 3 hours break for a family dinner.
It is nice.
