Destined to become the most photographed baby ever

Back on the 13th September Claire and I discovered, much to our immeasurable astonishment, that our furious two-year efforts at reproduction had finally - and quite unexpectedly - succeeded. To say I was shocked would be the understatement of the millennium. If I had woken up the following day with my head sewn to the carpet I would not have been more surprised.

Last Thursday Claire and I went to the hospital for her 8-week scan (although it turned out to be 6weeks+5days as it happens, but still…) which we had been looking forward to with nervous
anticipation for the previous three weeks. Having taken so long to get to this stage we were more than a little anxious for everything to be OK and so sitting there in the ultrasound waiting room at 8am was a little nerve-racking to say the least.

Seeing the - I hesitate to use the word “baby” at this stage, but don’t really want to say “it” - baby’s heartbeat for the first time was absolutely incredible. Our little blob (yes, that’s so much better than “it”) that I have nicknamed Grand Moff Tarkin, much to Claire’s immense disappointment, is just 8.1mm long but has an ickle heart pulsing away inside already. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen and such a relief that everything, so far, seems to be OK. Touch wood it will continue to be so. D-Day, give or take a week or two, is apparently the 24th May 2008.
