School Disco

I would just like to extend a massive hand of thanks to EVERYONE who dressed up like idiots and came along to Hammersmith on Saturday to drunkenly assist me in celebrating my 29+1th Birthday. I also want to say a few words about Andy - if anyone doesn’t know - and you surely all do - Andy emigrated to America almost 3 years ago to get married and when he went it obviously made a lot of people back here very unhappy. Mainly because he still owed us money, but still...

Anyway, I’m sitting around at Chez Kev (the greatest Hotel in Bracknell) on Saturday night a few hours before going out and the doorbell rings. The service in that place is shocking so I had to go and answer it myself, and there, standing in the porch is Andy - who to the best of my knowledge should have been some 2000 miles away in Philadelphia. He’d flown over just for the weekend - the nutcase.

He then proceeded to think up as many ways as possible to surprise the other arriving guests at Chez Kev - answering the door himself, sauntering down the stairs and jumping out on people in bedrooms - setting in the process a new World Amateur Record for the most number of heart-attacks administered in the space of an hour. What a guy. Kudos should also go to Kev for sneakily helping to arrange Andy's undetected slip into the country.

Anyway, it was an amazing night at PooNaNa and we certainly saw some sights. Do you remember Bryan Robson scoring for England just 27 seconds in to the match against France in the 1982 World Cup ? Well Kevin set a similar record by pulling his first, erm, “beauty” of the night some 27 seconds after arriving at the club. By my estimations, by the end of the night he had canoodled with at least 8 lovely ladies - and those were just the ones I saw.

At one point Andy was dragged off by his tie and got lost. He turned to a fellow drunken reveler for assistance:
"I can’t find my friends."
"What do they look like?"
"They’re wearing white shirts, black trousers and school ties."

They both scan the smokey, strobe-lit dancefloor which is filled with 2000 drunkards dressed in white-shirted school uniforms...

"You’re never going to see your friends again."

We bounced around to “Are You Gonna Go My Way”, crooned along to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and sauntered around the balconies to “Build Me Up Buttercup”. I also seem to remember WaaayOoooWaaayOoooWaaayayayayyyyoooo-ing along to “Walk Like An Eygptian”, Awimberwim-ing along to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, a bit of Shakin’ Stevens doing his thing and all of us screaming out, “Eat My Goooaaallll!” on a packed dancefloor. It was a total musical cheesefest.

And then there was that girl whose trousers kept falling off, the guy wearing the mortar board which was grabbed by some random schoolgirl and hurled like a frisbie across the bar, overpriced Smirnoff ice in cardboard cups that went down far too easily and sooo many other things I can’t remember. Add to that the Rz 3-0 win earlier in the day, my name appearing on the scoreboard FOUR times and my stylish, new ‘DoubleZero’ Rz shirt and it was a fine day indeed, thanks again to everyone.
