Ok, so i havent really told anybody but i'm sick. I get really tired and completely drained of energy out of nowhere and very absent minded. I'm sure my bandmates could back me up on that. I get the shakes. I had really bad chest pains while i was playing tonight at Theo's. It really really hurt. I've gotten some unwelcomed rashes below my belly button (not too far below) and on my right elbow. Maybe i should get this checked out. I havent really told anyone because I'm a little scared. Maybe I have a mild case of something like mono or cancer. I'm not sleeping too much or too little. I'm not staying completely idle nor am i excercising like a champion. I'm not eating band foods, though i have eaten better...anyways.
On a lighter note, Monday night was one of the best experiences of my life. I performed with some of the best jazz musicians in the world....yes world. Not just in America. "Who was there, Ryan?" Well, the washboard player (yeah) and trumpet player from Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Band were there being amazing. "Who else?" Oh yeah, and the bass player and drummer from The New Wolverines...from Australia! Chauncey (the drummer) gave me some great advice. He's a great guy. He is one of Josh's idols so it was very cool to have the guy Josh tries to emulate play on Josh's set. I emulate Josh, and he emulates Chauncey, to a degree. Right on down the line. Anyways, Al Knapper was there as well as Jim Valentine, Scott Silver and Ron Madow. Oh! And the bass sax player from Geoff Powers' group (another Australian group, subgroup of The New Wolverines) was playing Trombone. Oh shit! And another guy from San Fransisco who has his own Hot Club group. It was so tits. The sound was full as well as the room. I played on Digga Digga Doo after Jamey, Sarah, Scott and I did Paper Moon. During Digga Digga Doo, Scott sang the words to it...another Scott Silver memory to remember him by.
Earlier that day, guys from The New Wolverines, Geoff Powers' group and Spats Langham's group plus more all came over to Josh's to just shoot the shit. There was also a hot shot from New York there shootin the breeze. Good food, good people, good times. After the Show on Monday, Jim told me how the Bix fest got started. It was very crazy but lets just say that i played a few of the people who got it started. I got lots of support and got to flex my chops a little bit that night...awesome beans. Good times all around.
I feel like just playing jazz. I'm a horrible rock drummer. I'm a horrible drummer in general. I stand in the way of myself. Just like i did with golf. I'm a bad thinker. But i cant get around it. I could learn how to take a compliment to heart. I'm convinced that i'll just fall into a sea of ok drummers because I'm no Joel Dick or Jimmy Chamberlin. Hey, chauncey doesnt have amazing chops but he's kick ass. He drops bombs. If i found my style maybe things would be better. I played like poop tonight at Theo's but people still packed the place and loved us. We have a fan base RAWR?!
Yay for having a nice and polite conversation with Photo Eye. I hope to have more.
Tomorrow, more speed and endurance drills. Then, the Hardacre film festival in Tipton with the Metrons.
love!
