Oh goodness, I really enjoyed God of Small Things, I had just bolded too many others that month and I'd always rather steer people towards non-fiction. I do recommend it, so long as you don't mind descriptions of filth and bodily functions.
The trouble is I can't get West of Kabul East of New York as an audiobook unless I find another person who hasn't done an Audible free trial yet (and will let me use theirs), and I have the most massive print to-read list! I did find his Games Without Rules though, about the history of Afghanistan, so that's on my list.
Boo about mixing up the Greenes! End of the Affair was the first thing I've read by him (audible does some book of the year thing, that they give for free and that was the one last year). It was so beautifully written and the emotions so accurate (and pertinent to a period of my life). I will have to read one of his less depressing books soon.
It was amazing! It's an incredibly in-depth analysis of Homer's writings and motives and characters. This is the type of analysis you can't do on your own unless you've studied that historical period (and that which came before and after it) and those writers for years.
I highly recommend it. Alexander is a wonderful writer (her book The Bounty is on my favorites list as well), and the book just kept getting better and better.
I think you'll love it. It focuses more on Achilles than anyone else. I don't have any special interest in Homer but this one sucked me in immediately.
