A bench warrant has been issued for the woman accused of dragging a dog to its death three years ago after she failed to show up for a hearing in 4th Judicial District Court this morning.
Sharon Fowler was set to appear in court this morning so ad hoc Judge James Boddie could decide whether to appoint a sanity commission to determine Fowler’s competency to stand trial.
Fowler had been free on $5,000 bond, which Boddie reset at $10,000 this morning.
Fowler is charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal for killing a Labrador retriever puppy after it scratched her son in August 2003.
Fowler allegedly became enraged after noticing her then 5-year-old son’s injuries in a West Monroe mobile home park where he was outside playing with friends, though police reports show none of the scratches broke the skin.
Fowler told police at the time of her arrest that the dog also tried to bite her when she attempted to tie a rope around its neck.
Witnesses claim she then struck the dog with a hammer several times, tied it to her vehicle, dragged it and ran over its head. The dog later had to be euthanized.
Fowler faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted
