Needing help from Kindle and Calibre users

I have a Kindle Touch. I have successfully uploaded two E-books using Calibre, but whenever I try to upload a fanfic file I get an 'error communicating with device' message. I've hard restarted the Kindle, and I've uninstalled and redownloaded the Calibre programme. This hasn't helped. I've checked out the Calibre message boards, and have done all the obvious things. There are a few threads dealing with this issue but they are old threads and incomprehensible gobbledegook to me as well. Is the problem with Calibre or Kindle?
