British Museum

Last night after work I felt like doing something but everyone was busy so I ended up wandering around and discovered parts of the British Museum are open late on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Not all of it but the Egyptian Hall, the libraries and Greek hall plus parts of the Assyrian area are all clear to go through. Since i mainly wanted to see the Parthenon marbles again plus some of the Egyptian stuff I figured i'd kill an hour or so in there.

Anyway the thing i love about this museum is that it's all open... Most of the exhibits are on display without being locked in glass cabinets. Occaisionally there is a small barrier in front of them but mostly it's clear. So its amazing. Of course the main things like the Rosetta Stone are locked up in a glass cabinet but even the Parthenon Marbles are out in the open. The other great thing is it's free. Okay there are donation boxes everywhere and they ask for £3 to go towards upkeep of the museum but they don't hassle you if you don't donate.

Anyway what pisses me off is the amount of people going up and touching things despite the signs (in many languages) asking "Please don't touch the objects". I mean seriously you touch things and eventually they are gonna be locked up behind stuff... don't people get that? And considering most of the people who were doing this were English speakers they can't use the excuse their language wasn't on the sign. It was just annoying.

Still it was a good way to kill a couple of hours.
