the weight of the world

...or at least, the World Cup. Today is round one of the semi-finals. I predict Italy will win over Germany, if all holds true to form. Why, you ask?

I've been playing along at home, you see. I've been doing a bit of magic in my kitchen. It's been completely unintentional, but I don't know that it can be claimed as mere coincidence.

The rules of our home game have been simple: each day any games are being played, our menu is decided by whichever teams are playing. As I've only got one kitchen and two people to feed on a regular basis, we've been making one type of cuisine every night, choosing from the list provided us by that day's players in the World Cup.

For the past week or so, everyone we've chosen has lost. How we've been choosing them has had a lot to do with personal whim. We've also been careful not to repeat any country we've already done earlier in the Cup, so that's automatically restricted us on some days---like today, when we'll be feasting on Germany, because we already did Italy a few weeks ago.

Let's march backward through the past week so I can illustrate, shall we?

Germany vs. Argentina
Italy vs. Ukraine

We chose Argentina. Did Argentina win? No. Were they delicious? Of course.

Brazil vs. Ghana
Spain vs. France

We chose Ghana. Did Ghana win? No. Were they tasty? Oh yes. Although I think the feijoada we made in honour of Brazil earlier in the Cup was tastier, but a dish-by-dish competition that wasn't planned for isn't exactly fair.

Italy vs. Australia
Switzerland vs. Ukraine

We chose Australia. Did Australia win? I think you know the answer. Australia was, however, no less delicious for their losing, I assure you.

With results like these, I will be slightly surprised if Germany doesn't lose today.

Still, they'll be delicious. We haven't met a country we haven't liked yet. :)
