I just finished watching the Lost finale, and it may surprise those of you who remember how I much I hated the Battlestar Galactica ending to know that I actually quite liked this.
I won't get too much into the specifics of what happened and why they happened, but I will continue with my comparison to the BSG finale. I think Lost pulled it off where BSG failed. This is partly because Lost has always been a show that was -- while it was pretending to be about all sorts of weird mysteries -- actually just about these characters and how they became more and more involved in each others' lives. I think it's actually really impressive that the show managed to end on, let's face it, a rather sappy note, and yet that worked for it.
Oddly enough, I was all prepared to be really disappointed in this finale if it didn't actually give concrete scientific (or at least sci-fi) explanations for all the various mysteries, like what exactly the Smoke Monster was made out of, what the bright light was, or how various miracles occured on the island.
But I find that I really don't mind that that didn't happen. There are a lot of implied explanations in the finale, which I think works just as well. The idea is sort of that the Island is a mystery, that it has things going on in it that some characters, Jack in particular, will never understand, but that the actual point of the journey was for Jack and all these other characters to find peace: peace with their families, peace with a lover, or just peace by themselves.
Now I wish I could mention more about this right now, but ironically, I have just run smack-dab into the mother of all Migraine aura-stages. I get the hilarious appropriate aura stage where I become incredibly hyper-aware of my time sense, and everything feels as if it's out of synch with reality. Is there any more perfect feeling to experience after finishing a show that was all about confusing you with time travel, alternate realities, and a dislocated sense of being...Lost?
So this M. McGregor saying: I AM THE MASTER OF TIME AND SPACE -- ALSO, I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY NEUROLOGIST AGAIN NEXT WEEK. GOOD THING.
Edit to add: *spoilers*
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/tv/la-et-lost-review-20100524,0,289843.story Here's a hilariously WRONG review of the final episode. I don't know how long it will stay up for since the author apparently watched the last episode while doing math homework or something and didn't quite pay attention. It's funny just to see all the comments after the article pointing out how utterly incorrect the recap is.
I wouldn't be surprised if the article is taken down or replaced in the next few hours.
