I'm sure there are some advantages, like you love the kids you work with (though kids can be both pretty cool and pretty rotten -- even the same ones at the same time -- pretty much everywhere), and your Mom and Aunt and history and such, but, for me, anyway, the challenges of living in Texas would far outweigh any of those. I had an opportunity (more like a constant nagging) presented by the company I worked with earlier this year to move our family to Ft Worth. I finally figured out the appropriate response to get them to let it go was one they couldn't argue with: "I am never leaving a blue state." Since I know you're not stupid, I'll just suppose you are made of far stronger stuff than me

City Texas is way different than Rural Texas. Houston has a bad ass arts community and a thriving gay community. Our previous Mayor was an out lesbian.

The problem is the rural folks control the state legislature. My instinct has always been to stay and fight and if I can just hang on immigration is likely to turn my red state blue.

Besides my students deserve one voice in their ear that doesn't think The Flintstones is a documentary.

Fort Worth is a weird place...It is called Cow Town by locals. And it is part of the Dallas Metroplex. I hate Dallas but love Fort Worth. It isn't liberal but it isn't hateful. I don't know that you would enjoy moving there for a job...but if they need you for a project, there are worse fates.

I had an LJ friend years ago who lived in Texas, and after one of the more awful elections about a decade ago, she said that the younger generation was mainly waiting for the older one (and their bigotry in all its forms) to die off.

Because that's the other factor in the overall climate there. The cultural divide between generations seems much stronger there than in some places.
