i.

“How long do we have?”

“Long enough,” he says, “if we try.” His teeth scrape along Alex’s jaw, neck, collarbone.

“Come on then,” says Alex.

ii.

The observers watch the water-clock as much as they watch the fighters. This is important, how long it takes him to win. Alex will win.

iii.

Alex fancies he can hear the growing riot, even this far below. But he’s not listening for the roar of a mob - just footsteps.

iv.

“This is stupid,” Alex says, but he lets himself be secreted behind the tapestry.

“An experiment.” One hand rubs his hose. "Can you be quiet?”
