Today I gave a tour of the gardens to 20 6-9 year old special students. By special I mean extremely ADHD & hyperactive. It was the first time I ever gave a tour of the gardens but I think I did ok. I had an incredibly hard time keeping them focused, so we played a game. I had them separate into two groups, butterflies and bees (my talk focused mainly on what kind of bugs/birds pollinate what kind of flower and how you can tell). The butterflies flapped their wings (arms) wide and slowly, while the bees flapped theirs short and fast (elbows in, hands fluttering), then I made them run about 30 meters back and forth, 3 times, to settle the age old question of which flies faster, bees or butterflies. It was a tie. It was actually kind of fun. They mostly weren't so great at answering my questions, but they got a kick out of repeating the latin names of the plants syllable by syllable at the top of their voices. SAR-A-CIN-EA!!!! EP-I-PHYTE!!!! could be heard throughout the time and space this morning. Most of the adults were answering the pollination questions by the time we were done, it was funny. They were more interested and paid more attention than the kids. Some even stayed after to ask me some questions about plants/garden issues they have at home. The kids had fun to though, especially running around and smelling herbs I picked from the herb garden.
Then I went to the gym. I'm pleased to say I've lost 4 lbs in the past week & 1/2, decreased my body fat by 1.2%, and decreased my bmi by 0.8 kg/m 2 . Woot! 10-15 lbs / 6% body fat to go!!
