Honey and Clover is probably my favorite manga to ever exist in the world. Every year I reread it at least once, and I cry every time.
I love it because it's not jut a story about bitter sweet love. It's also about growing up, loss, and deep compassionate friendship.
The parts about them as friends are as beautiful as the parts about them finding the drive to go on.
My favorite storyline is Ayu's because I have a soft spot for heart break and finding new love, but the one that moves me the most is Takemoto's.
There's two major love polygons. There is Takemoto, Hagu, Morita, and Hanamoto. Then there is Yamada, Mayama, Rika, Rika's Husband, and Nomiya.
Both are so bitter sweet.
The thing with Takemoto, is it hurts to see his unrequited love, but you can't hate Morita either. He and Hagu really feel like destined lovers, and you can tell Morita loves her so much. He is just really childish and Hagu is still immature. They dance around each other never really moving forward. At the same time seeing how they love each other feels sweet but painful because you know Takemoto will never win.
Then there is Ayumi who just can't get over Mayama, Mayama who's head over heals for Rika, Rika who just can't get over her deceased Husband, and Nomiya who falls for the Ayumi. Ayumi loves Mayama even till the end of the manga, but she begins to let Nomiya inside.
