My first year at Katsucon and hopefully won't be the last. This Washington Metro convention was located at the heart of crystal city Virginia. Where as you can watch anime on one side or go sight seeing the DC area down the road. When I entered the convention, I was greeted with the annoying hate I have of wapanese faggots or people who think they're Japanese. So why did I come to this con to begin with? Well it was for the music guest Aural Vampire. We (me, Sal, Eric and Chris) headed to the line for registration, where one of the staff members told us that this was the line for the registration. We waited for a good 15 minutes and when we got to the front the line actually turned out to be the regular registration line. So already I was already annoyed. So we ended up going to the actual prereg line inside a parking garage where the line was even longer. Like seriously, we should have just registered normally. Only reason why was because of the attendance cap and the worry about not getting it, cause it will suck if we traveled and we got rejected. So we ended up waiting for about 30-40 minutes playing tetris and bull shitting around. By the time we got our badges, which sucked, cause I like the customizer ones like the ones from animenext or otakon, we went to see the concert, which was located on the basement floor ballroom. Unfortunately the concert had to be delayed but it was no problem, things happens. So we went to the game room to bs around. This was stupid, they wouldn't allow bags in the room, which was strange because all the games were locked up, or supposely which was stupid. I ended up playing melee and lost to some loser with his jigglypuff, and eric lost to him also. Dang that guy is good. So I ended up playing battle stadium don which I haven't played in so long, and I introduced Eric to it. It was a pretty fun, well maybe because I was kicking ass and Sal was trying to kick ass in teken.
Afterwards we went towards the concert ballroom. Thank god for chris for getting us a spot on line, because there was actually a long line. The concert was a stand up, which means no seats, when we got inside, there was strobe lights like crazy and it was cold. But everyone knows otaku's can't take like 5 minutes to clean up or shower or atleast put some axe or something. Everyone went crazy when aural vampire started playing, their first song from the one from troopers the one song I wanted to hear and I got a video of it. Ex Chika is really pretty, and raveman is awesome with his mask and once in a while the eyes light up. Overall the concert was really good and it got me to buy their older album that came from 2004. I'm glad that the group now as a sign with avex, I know they'll do good, the other songs they played were good too, including the one in the intermission, which I really want.
Once the concert was over we went back to the hotel and call it a night. To me that concert was the rave and you better believe we were hot in there. Wonder what's going the group's mind when they saw how smelly those people were. Our hotel was lovely as well, for 90 bucks we got a nice room, too bad there was no internet, but it was a city hotel what do you expect. Went to sleep and day 2 began which was going to be a long ass day for all of us.
We went back to the con roughly around noon, and the first thing we all did was go to the dealers room. The dealers room was small, or maybe big to some people but to me and chris' standards it's small, me and chris left early to get a cd for aural vampire to get their autographs. While waiting we ended up going to the q and a and listen in. Some people had questions about the iidx part and the funny part is they didn't know what it was. Apparently they got their song in because of akira from iidx. But its all good. After the q and a we got the autographs. I got her to sign me cd and shake her hand, lawls I am never washing this hand again. >__> jaykay. Chris also got his cd signed, and Sal got his badge signed. Unfortunately eric wasn't with us there was a huge lack of service for our phones in that area, except for mine.
After the autographs we went to eat and then returned to the dealers room for me full examination. I found a couple of things that I wanted but, I ended up buying a shaymin doll about the size of my head. I think that pokemon is way too cute to resist. So pretty much that and the cd was 55 bucks down the drain. The weapons in the room wasn't as impressive as otakons. But chris ended up buying one go him. Afterwards we hit up the game room again, and played games and bs around til our panels. Our panels got canceled and in place they showed some anime, that was kinda interesting. It was about making a pack or something like that and fighting. To me it looked like a typical fighting anime series, but I'll look into it. After that we went to see the death note 2 the last name. Even though me and chris already saw it, the movie is awesome good to rewatch again especially for the ending.
And once that was finish, btw 2 hours was taken from the movie. we went back to the game room for chris, because they had sf4 set up for the 360, and the game wasn't out yet, and it was a legit copy. Apparently the 7-eleven broke street date so everyone and their mom was playing it, congrats to chris for winning twice. Before I was playing IIDX until I got into halo for some reason and started playing that for a while until they had to set up for a tourney. Which sucks, cause I was doing good.
After the gameroom we went home. I wanted to go to the dance, but they had a valentine's day theme ball set up, which didn't end until 1:30am, which was when the dance was going to happen. And I wanted to get sal back asap since he had work in the mornning. Our drive got us back at 6am. So in the end a big thanks to chris for driving, and thank the con for having an awesome guest, I wanted to see the other guest they had too, ymck but I couldn't make that.
In the end, the convention to me was just another typcial one, I probaly will not be going next year unless a good guest shows up. It was good for a first year, even though it had some bad things, but nothing is perfect.
Sum it up.
What I like.
-Location aka hotel/convention and area
-Musical guest
Organization
What I didn't like
-No bags in game room.
-Valentine's day dance til 1:30am atleast 11-midnight would have been ideal.
-Rave being at 1:30am
Overall 8/10.
