"Riding Across the Desert, on a Fine Arab Charger...."

So I just read this really really intersting thing about spices! I'm reading about Animal Behavior, and this chapter is on foraging behavior, and the book was talking about why humans do weird things like eat dirt (historically) and drink alcohol and eat spices even though none of those things have nutritional value. So apparently the hypothesis is that spices have antibacterical properties and so they used to be good for preserving food before refrigeration. So that's why Mexican food (and other food from warm, tropical climates) is so spicy, and why Minnesotans who are descended from all those way North, frigid countries like to eat things like lefse and hot dish that are virtually tasteless! Everything makes sense now!

I saw The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys this weekend and it was SO GOOD! SO GOOD!

I'm not usually up this late, at least not with the intent of staying up much later, but I have a really scary test on Tuesday, so I feel like I can't go to sleep until I can identify winter birds like t'aint nobody's buisness. Good thing I'm all showered and blow-dryed and revitalized. mmm showers!

Okay I'm going to go and study more. Just remember. White Breasted Nuthatches forage upside-down, and the way to distinguish between a Merganser and a Goldeneye at long range is the white cheek patch.

mmm I miss trains and cheap gelatto and my ugly Venice hat
