I'm reading A Chance at Childhood Again and Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul.

The first one is excellent.  It's got a beautiful message, and it's written nicely.  I think the title explains it well, but the book is about being childlike, like the Bible is always talking about.

"Children fail at a lot of things.  And, most of the time, their failure is public.  Conversely, one good public failure is enough to send many adults into seclusion.  Such a retreat would never occur to small children.  They know that goofing up goes with the territory of being a little kid.

Besides, toddlers never consider failure to be final.  Can you imagine a crawler falling on his first attempt at toddling and declaring, "Well, that's it.  I guess I was never meant to walk"?  Can you imagine a three-year-old accidentally wetting her bed once and deciding, therefore, to wear diapers for the rest of her life?

Little children never focus on their failures; they focus on their goals.  Adults,on the other hand, become so consumed with their failures that they forget their goals."

Then, the jury is still out on Captivating.    The beginning of the back cover says, "Ever woman was once a little girl.  And every little girl holds in her heart her most precious dreams.  She longs to be swept up into a romance, to play an irreplaceable role in a great adventure, to be the Beauty of the story.  Those desires are far more than child's play.  They are the secret to the feminine heart."
And, maybe that's true, but I think this book can't help but buy into traditional gender roles, and I'm not a big fan of those right now.  I don't really think gender roles are God-instilled, but culturally constructed, and this book's entire premise is that God created girls to be a certain way.
I'm not saying the book is all crap, by any means, I'm not even very skeptical, that was just an immediate flaw I noticed.  Two people who know me very well both believe this book will do my heart well, and I trust them, so I'll read it, and look for all the great things about it.

I'm trying to go to bed early now.  Good night.
