SFF: Thor Ragnarok

Nov 27, 2017 21:47

Because I can't keep putting this off. Even if I am pretty sure this is not in-depth or whatever, it contains spoilers and such.

OK. SO.

I went into this movie with pretty much no expectations - I didn't think it was going to be good, I didn't think it would be bad. I'd seen one or two ridiculous trailers, but I've ignored the fandom and hype for.... years. Anyway. And Tim said it was hilarious.

And it opens with Hemsworth as Thor being funny. And, the scale of the set piece even there made me just... I crossed my fingers and went "please be this good the entire way through..."

(and it was, ok. It was).

The good:
oh, god. So much.

- Thor being funny!
- Loki and Loki's play!
- HELA AND HER EVILNESS. Also, her disappointment in how no one remembers her.
- Like, can I talk about how Hela was allowed to be evil without any sort of angsty "oh, I want daddy to love me." bullshit, or anything even hinting that the film was apologizing for her being evil (I am looking right at you, GI Joe with your bullshit "Baroness was mind-controller by her brother to be evil" explanation)? Because it was amazing. THIS IS HOW YOU EVIL WOMEN, HOLLYWOOD. She was a woman, but she wasn't all tits and ass hanging out everywhere (her costume was a fucking delight). She kicked SO MUCH ASS, I just. So amazing.

Right. Back to the good.

Ahem.
- those ridiculous mosaics Hela blew up. Just. lol.
- VALKYRIE. I loved her so hard - I basically want her and Mels to go out and paint the universe red one of these days, because it would be hilarious and amazing, and Rory and Amy would be like "HOW DID WE GET TWO CHILDREN, DAMMIT."
- But I also loved her change of heart, as cheesy as it was. And her glee with the gun. And her constant sarcasm and rolling her eyes at Thor.
- Loki. For his "THAT'S HOW IT FEELS." moment (this movie was so fucking funny). Also, for being himself and betraying everyone (as he does), and-
- Thor being smart enough to KNOW Loki. And I just.
- I love their relationship in this movie. They are brothers and they hate each other and they love each other and together they hate and love their father. They're complicated and simple and I am not usually a huge "yay brothers!" fan, but I like them.
- HEIMDALL. Like, seriously, who DIDN'T like him? I loved how from the beginning you could tell he was up to something and that he was there as the leader of the refugees and saving people and being badass and perfect.
- Also, the EPIC scale of things, with all of the refugees. I liked that.
- THE WAY TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE WAS TO DESTROY ASGARD. I could not love this more. I just. Eeee. I mean, it's sad that they've lost their home and all, but THAT IS WHAT PROPHECIES ARE FOR, YO.
- The rebellion on the trash planet. That was awesome, and nicely threaded.
- ODIN IS DEAD. hahahah. I hate old Merlin types. (fuck you, Merlin, even if you're secretly the Doctor at least once while River is Nimue)
- Ok, and also, I liked how both Thor and Loki got that bit of closure with dear old dad.

The meh:
- Um. Hulk. Like, he's ok, and sometimes amusing? But, like, don't fucking care about Hulk. Or Banner. And the less said about Natasha/Banner, pls.
- Ok, but the having to wear Tony's clothing bit was hilarious.
- The dude. I'm too lazy to look him up, but the ruler guy who was the announcer on trash planet. No offense, but, like, you've seen one of those dudes, you've seen them all.
- Thor and his "That's what heroes do" thing was wince-worthy, as was his trying to play Banner/the Hulk (Thor, honey, you are not your brother)
- I... Like, I want to be sad about the Warriors Three? but... they weren't ever a big part of the franchise.

The bad:
... um.
- Ok, I guess the lack of women conversing/interacting can go here? Like, it's funny, but I didn't notice until I thought about it, and I think part of that was I felt that all of the women in the movie (named, or whatever), were pretty well-fleshed out, so it wasn't as obvious. And it wasn't as annoying.
- No Jane or Darcy. I could give zero fucks about Selveig. But I like Jane and Darcy. To be fair, they're really not superheroes, and this was very much a Superhero movie with cosmic things happening (and while I think Jane could do sciencey things, I'm not sure how well it would have fit in with everything else?). Like, I get why they wrote them out. I just miss them.
- No Sif. Which does mean she's alive somewhere, so huzzah (I know, Jaime A. had schedule conflicts).

And those are my basic thoughts.

I really enjoyed the movie and thought it was epic and hilarious and FARSCAPE (oh god so Farscape), and I have to admit, though I'm a little annoyed, but...

I think I liked Thor Ragnarok better than Guardians.

Like. I like them both! But Thor delivered better on the promise and the plotting and everything was just... better. Even if Guardians finally gave us the sister-bonding moments, it was bogged down with Peter and his dull father issues.

(I cannot believe I just admitted that).

ahem.

I want all of the Valkyrie chasing around the universe drinking with Mels, River, Benny, Ace, etc., etc. fic ever, guys. It doesn't have to be anything but gen, even.

And if I could get a side of Hela taking over the world and being evil and killing people...

(that is so embarrassing. but she was so evil with no apologies. HOW OFTEN do I get my villainesses evil with no apologies or naked tits and using their bodies to seduce their allies? Especially when they are mega-powered and goddesses and unstoppable unless you start Ragnarok?)
