Movie pimpage of the month and then some.

The weather has been ridiculously good for the past week or so, the temperature being close to +30 during the days. It's been so hot that even the sheep are acting all weird: one decided to roll over and sunbathe the other day. WUT? It was the most hilarious thing I've seen in a while.

But onto the reason why I'm really here. I finally had a chance to see the movie I Can't Think Straight (indeed) the other day and it had me aww-ing and squeeing all over the place. Oh, shush. Sometimes, a girl just needs her sugar-coated romcoms, all right? So yeah, I think this might've been the sweetest thing I've seen since Imagine Me & You (INDEED). In fact, I was so besotted with the film that I went and ordered the DVD right away. When it comes to lesbian romcoms, the British obviously know what they're going. Picspam is a must.

The movie is based on a book by Shamim Sarif (who also directed the movie) and tells the story of two women, Tala, a Jordanian, and Leyla, a British Indian, who meet in London and fall in love. They're both in relationships with men (Tala's engaged to marry someone), but their feelings for each other force them to take another look at their lives & truly be true to themselves.

A plot such as this could've been über-angsty and miserable, but, instead, it's handled with warmth, humour and a touch of realism. Apart from the beautiful relationship between the two women, the most memorable storyline is that of the housekeeper of Tala's somewhat uptight mother: the housekeeper (played brilliantly by the wonderful Nina Wadia) has made it her mission to spit in her madam's drinks and make her drink it, but fate always seems to intervene. It's hysterical.

But anyway. Onto the picspam.

Meet Tala. A smart and strong-willed woman from the Middle East.

And Leyla. A sweet and a little clumsy British Indian woman who is aspiring to become a fiction writer.

They meet through Leyla's boyfriend who happens to be Tala's best friend. It's a beautiful mix of fate, coincidences and brave decisions that finally brings them together in the romantic sense of the word.

The development & build-up of the attraction between the two women is nothing short of real and believable, and it's been a while since I've seen a first kiss that is as natural as the one between Tala and Leyla, a kiss that simply happens.

Also, it's proved, yet again, that dancing always leads to hotness.

Another thing that utterly charmed me was the humour. It's both subtle and in-your-face, depending on the situation, and, for instance, the scene where Leyla comes out to her parents has the perfect mix of realism and humour:

[Leyla's mother refuses to listen]
Leyla: Just listen to me, I'M GAY!
[shocked silence]
Leyla's dad: [off screen] I'm home! [walks into the kitchen & senses the tension] What did I miss?
Leyla: I...I'm gay.
Leyla's dad: But I've only been gone two hours.

In the centre of the story, however, is the relationship between Tala and Leyla. They're sweet and adorable and hot and sexy together, but it's all done without going overboard into ridiculousness.

And look! There's even a more-than-obvious parallel with Imagine Me & You:

A park bench & coffee. Seems to be an obligatory combination in British lesbian movies.

All in all, I Can't Think Straight is a perfect romantic comedy and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see a well-written and utterly compelling love story. And, well, the hotness certainly doesn't hurt!

But oh, damn. The season finale of Hospital Central was just...I can't even...I mean... Well, the episode ended like this. HOLY CRAP AND THEN SOME. There won't be new episodes until September, which causes me nothing but pain and misery. Maca! *clings*

Ahem, anyway.

Right, finally, this has been all over my flist already, but it simply needs to be re-posted once more. Hands down, the best blog out there at the moment: Awkward Family Photos. It's exactly what the name suggests, awkward family photos which have you howling with laughter. I'm still not over this one.
