oh, I completely agree with you! I don't know about BSG 'cos I haven't seen it but the Katniss/Peeta resolution...didn't satisfy me at all. Especially since everything else was so well done (I was really impressed with the Hunger Games).
As for fic the only one I've read was a Katniss/Peeta and it was good, but I don't think it'll satisfy you tinhatness.
I suppose I admire Collins for setting up an obviously plausible pairing (Katniss/Gale) and then going for a different pairing for Katniss. But yeah, it didn't really do it for me.
There seems to be a lot of Katniss/Peeta fic around!
That's funny because I thought Katniss/Peeta was the pairing - I didn't expect a Katniss/Gale ending at all. (Not that I can't see that pairing working or being a good outcome). But, in general, I just didn't like the way it played out. I thought there was a nice build up but at some point, I would have wanted to see more trust build between them, slowly. I've only read the series once but I thought the cave scenes at the end of Mockingjay were a little off and a little gross or something.
I loved The Hunger Games so much but my enjoyment went down with the following books and the ending just seemed - I don't know - sloppy? So I'm torn on the books but really looking forward to the movie.
Yes, the trust between Gale and Katniss was eroded very effectively by the end. :-/ (Whereas the second half of Mockingjay seemed to be all about Peeta and Katniss regaining their trust in one another.
I really enjoyed the first book, and was sort of expecting them to get better (the way you expect any writer to get better, I suppose), but they didn't, for me. Which isn't to say that I didn't like them.
I've not seen BSG, so I can't attest to any similarities or differences between the two. I do agree with you on the "Peeta WUVS her and she should reciprocate!" plot angle and thought it was handled in an interesting way, since Katniss herself was clearly worried about it from the moment it started to happen. But, after everything that happened in book 3, I wasn't annoyed that they ended up together. Gale's transformation over the course of #3 started to trouble me, even before the big finish of bad. There were other issues in the overall plot that bothered me far, far more, to be honest. (The final 50 or so pages of MJ were a blur of me muttering "oh no oh no oh no you didn't go there".)
I'm so nervous that the movie is going to be terrible. On one hand, it's the sort of work that would look good on screen and has drama aplenty; on the other, it's going to be easy to mess up, and the casting news so far is not good. :(
Gale's transformation was certainly very troubling, and I did wonder if I'd missed hints in the previous two books or if Collins was doing a bit of retconning there.
I didn't like the bloodbath aspects of Mockingjay. Much more so than HP, where I felt that at least all the deaths meant something (even if I wanted more for some of them). I understand that she needed Katniss to be alone by the time she reached Snow, but I hated the way the rest of the group were simply killed off, just to get her there (with Katniss adding up their deaths as more guilt for her).
Feel free to rant at me about what bothered you, if you like. :)
What's wrong with the casting so far? The only thing I've seen is Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, and I haven't seen Winter's Bone, so can't really judge that one.
The casting... well, I'm sure Jennifer Lawrence is a fine actress, but visually speaking, she's not at all how Katniss is described in the book (Katniss describes herself as looking like Gale's sister, olive-skinned, dark hair and eyes, while her mother and Prim are described to be fair and blond-haired) and it seems like we're going the same, whitewashing direction that other Hollywood movies have gone before. I had hoped for something different, and can offer all kinds of cynical mutterings here, but that gets old quickly

I liked Katniss/Gale, but I knew it was Peeta early on. I also happen to like them, so I was happy. Not so happy at the ending! I wasn't expecting that.
I know nothing about Lawrence. Except she's rather tall (about 5'8" or so. Also Katniss is supposed to be 16, and this girl looks about 25. I think she really is 20. They're going to need a taller leading man....so Peeta might end up being Alex Pettyfer (who's iike 6'3") The other name for Peeta is Hunter Parish (but he's shorter then Lawrence, so I doubt the casting. The only one I know on sight is Alex. Don't know the others.
Pettyfer was a big child star in the UK for a while. But he grew up. Pretty good actor. He kind was a proto type to Dan Radcliffe. In fact,I think he tried out for the Potter role. Should have given it to him.Unlike Radcliffe, after he entered his teens, he vanished in to modeling. Now he's back. The little kid grew big.
After reading your article and all your comments I have a different reading of the series. I found Gale's transformation totally reall and believable. The truth is perfectly normal fine people adapt to the culture of killing and even thrive in it during war all the time. As she says he was able to adapt his animal hunting skills to people hunting easily. We can see this in his very practical response to events through out the story. There is never a thought that Gale would step in for another person other than his own siblings and depending on the circumstances (how much the family need him) not even then. This isn't a criticism of a character who risks his own life for his family just a recognition of reality

That's a good point. I guess this is something I don't like to think about too hard.
I disagree with you that Gale and Katniss can't be together now - I think there is still a possibility that they could find their way back to one another, although it would take a very long time. But yes, a lot of damage has been done by the events of the war.
You make very good points about the relationship between Peeta and Katniss. I look forward to more!
(I've been appreciating your Japan posts, BTW. Just not feeling very talkative on that score, because it's all so horrifying.)
Peeta won her though the strength he showed in his struggle to recover and in generally being a better person than Gale.
Part of my problem with the books (and it's a minor thing; I thought they were excellent overall) was that by the end, I didn't feel Katniss had any choice at all. I didn't feel Peeta won her, just that she'd been worn down beyond endurance.
(I do realise that's not what the author wants me to think. This is where the tin hat comes in. *g*)

I wouldn't worry too much about height - they can do all sorts of things with perspective. :)
