In which I am officially a tinhat
Ages ago, I saw someone on LJ comparing the Lee/Kara relationship (and the characters) on BSG to Katniss/Gale in The Hunger Games books. I made a mental note about that, because with BSG I am convinced that Lee and Kara were supposed to be together and the only reason they weren't was because the show fucked up the ending. Yes, that's a bit tinhatty.
This week I went away intending to do lots of writing, but cleverly forgot the power cord for my laptop, so ended up doing lots of reading, instead. Like the Hunger Games trilogy.
First things first: Katniss is brilliant and strong and damaged in lots of ways that are pretty similar to Kara. They're both great characters IMO. I also loved many of the other characters (Peeta, Gale, Finnick, Haymitch, Johanna...) and the way they stood up to the choices they had to make. I loved that there were no easy choices.
Secondly, by the end of book one I was nodding along, because the Katniss/Gale dynamic is very similar to the Lee/Kara one. Peeta maps onto Anders pretty nicely, as well.
Thirdly, I really hated the whole "Katniss has to love Peeta because he's in love with her and doing everything to save her" vibe. I love Peeta, but it's pretty clear that if they hadn't been chosen for the Hunger Games, they'd never have got together. (Also, his dad was in love with her mum, so Peeta and Katniss getting together somehow makes that right, too? Yuck.) And I hated what all the pretending/is-it-pretending? did to Katniss's head, although I thought that was very well done and pretty plausible. So I was still rooting for Katniss/Gale, right through the third book.
...yeah. Oh, well. Suzanne Collins may think she's killed that one off nicely (given what happened to Prim), but I have thoughts about that, and I'm not afraid to put them into fic.
I mean, the Peeta/Katniss thing was tied off pretty nicely, and even convincingly, by the end - I didn't hate it. But it also didn't exactly satisfy me the way a resolution with Katniss and Gale would have done. *dons tin hat*
