New Years Day 2010

Jan 01, 2010 23:47

After waking up and getting ready for the day, I was going to get online. Then I had the idea to go to Burger King and have a lunch with Bo instead. Bo was up for it too so we grabbed the laptop and headed over.

We were surprised when they told us at the counter that they weren't serving meat products. The machine for cooking them was down. O_o It reminded me of PJ's quote from Arby's about them being out of Roast Beef. Hehe. They said it would take about 20 minutes before it was up and running. I asked if we could order burgers and wait. She said that if I didn't mind waiting, then that would be fine.

I spent about 2 hours online doing various things on Facebook, mostly catching up on Apps that don't work at home. I was amused that about an hour after we got our food the machine had broken down again because I heard them telling people at the counter, again, that they weren't serving meat products. It's apparently due to a new grill machine they have and it has caused many issued at more than one BK.

I was getting ready to shore up what I was doing around 2pm when Bo noticed that Chris' ex wife had walked in the door. I noticed that his daughter was also with her. This intrigued me because I don't remember meeting his daughter before. I am told I met her about 6 years ago but I only vaguely remember meeting people that night. At any rate it was interesting to me to see her in real life after having looked through so many pictures of her at Chris' house. I contemplated telling Chris but decided that it might not be a good idea for reasons I wont get into.

I finally packed up the computer and as it turned out we left at the same time Chris' daughter and ex did. I kept wondering what Chris would say or do if he had been there. It all felt surreal to me because I knew his ex when she worked there and didn't know she married Chris.

From there we headed back to the house. I dropped off Bo and my computer before calling Chris to see if he was ready to go get coffee. As expected he answered the phone with "Good morning" at 2:30pm. Hehe. So I grabbed the movie and CD I had promised to bring over and headed back out.

I got there and as expected he was hung over. It is New Years Day after all. He told me that he had just woken up when I called and that he was pretty sure the human body wasn't meant to consume half a gallon of 80 proof. I agreed but wondered how that could possibly faze him so badly when he regularly drinks 5ths of higher proofs than that (120 and 190 proofs). Thing is he wasn't sure if he was hung over or still half drunk. He also wasn't sure which was worse. Hehe

I gave him the CD to rip and he added it to his computer. After he finished labeling the tracks and it got started copying the files he sat on the couch. We probably spent about half an hour watching the Rose Bowl.

While he was sitting on the couch I first heard then saw him playing with his new glass gauge earrings that he had picked out with me the other day. I thought they were pretty cool in the store but wondered what he would think about them after wearing them for a while. Apparently not only are they nice feeling but they make a chiming sound when tapped and he kept doing it. :) I was happy that I hadn't talked him into something he would end up disliking.

Around 3 pm he asked if I was ready to go get coffee stating that he didn't think he was going to get any more awake. I told him that I was only waiting for him thinking he wanted to watch the game. I also noted that I had asked him more than once if he was sure going New Years Day would be ok. :) He was actually fine with it still and just smiled.

We headed out for the coffee shop and I put my iPod in to play music. I started with Three Days Grace "Gone Forever". When the song was done Chris picked up the iPod to change the song. I told him he could pick what ever he wanted and he went to Three Days Grace "I Hate Everything About You", which is another of my favorites and in my current play list. Better yet he blasted the music, which didn't seem to bother him even with his "hangover". :D I always find it nice when someone rides with me that doesn't mind the volume being all the way up. ^_^

When we arrived at the coffee shop I wondered if the guy on the phone had really meant that they would be open today because the place was empty. I also wondered if that was a sign about the quality of the coffee. We headed inside though and they were indeed open. I found out later that it was rare fort he place to be so empty and that they figured it was because no one thought they would be open today. I, of course, had called to make sure so I knew there were supposed to be open.

I encountered a conundrum when we reached the counter that I had half expected. They ONLY serve coffee drinks. I wasn't sure what to order then. I kept looking over the menu and looking. Chris asked if I was trying to be difficult and I said no. He said that I was and I joked that I might be. I then told the lady at the counter that I really didn't like coffee at all. She suggested one of the steamers that they make saying that she could add nutmeg and cinnamon to the vanilla one. That sounded good so I went with that.

While Chris waited for me to decide what to order he looked around the place at the various old camera equipment. I was impressed with it myself but had to focus on ordering. -_-

Chris' gift certificate was for $10 and the total for my steamer and his machiato came to $7. I was actually surprised that it covered both drinks and then some. Chris got the balance back in change, but I was still impressed. The lady asked how I liked the steamer making sure she had done right by suggesting it to me. I was impressed with it and gave it a thumbs up. :)

After getting our drinks, Chris chose a seat at the table with the chess board on it. He asked me to play a game with him and I obliged. I was worried about it though because I have only really ever played with my dad and he is merciless when it comes to Chess, therefore I suck big time and make bad decisions while playing. So before we started I asked him not to chide me for bad decisions. He only nodded and we began the game.

We started off the game and in true fashion I started by mimicking his moves. I hate doing this but I am not good at strategizing with Chess. A few moves later and he had taken two of mine but given me one of his too. I was certain that he had been taking it easy on me and give me the one "take". During most of the game I took my time making my moves and occasionally paid by loosing a piece anyway.

I noticed suddenly that I had an advantage that should put him into Checkmate. I checked all the possibilities that I could come up with. I looked over the board again and again. He even asked me if I was waiting for him to forfeit out of boredom. -_- I said no and sighed, deciding to just go ahead and make the move to see what he had planned. He was going to talk but then looked at my move. Then to my complete shock he said "You know what?" and knocked over his king. I had truly checkmated him. I couldn't help but feel excited about that. :D I told him that was why I took so long because I couldn't believe that I had actually gained that advantage. I totally expected to loose the game. :) I didn't gloat about winning but it was hard not to be elated. :D I honestly don't think Chris expected me to win either. XD

We headed out after the game. The owners asked us what we thought and we both gave the drinks a thumbs up. After a little discussion about New Years we headed out.

On the way back I put in Three Days Grace again and cranked the volume. Chris was more than happy with that and we listened to the same two songs; both of us singing along. :)

When we got back to the apartment Chris put in Nausicaa (which was the movie I brought over to watch). He had known it as Warriors of the Wind and was interested to see it again. I told him that if he liked the soundtrack I had that as well and could bring it over at some other point. He was disappointed that I hadn't brought it over this time but I wanted to wait and see if he truly liked it or not first.

I was a little dismayed to find that he was not as happy about watching it as he had hoped. He started out by commenting that he was ready to 'Wax Nostalgic" but hardly half way through he got up and actually check out his Facebook page and even played some Mafia Wars. I was disappointed but didn't expect too much in the first place.

Since it's none of my business, I try not to watch what he does on Facebook when he is on while I am there. I can't really read most of it anyway from across the room but can discern things if I wanted to. This being said I saw that he went to read the note I sent him before I left BK asking how he felt today (because I recognized my icon from across the room). Of course he passed it off and didn't reply because I had already talked with him in person, however when he went to read it I noticed that most of the messages in his box were from me. Not just that I seem to be about the only one to write him but that he has kept them. This amused me because my inbox looks the same in reverse (I haven't cleared out any of my messages so there is a huge column of messages with Chris' icon).

When the movie finished and the credits were done I read the last words in Japanese out loud (O Wa Ri) meaning the end. It was kind of out of habit but Chris didn't understand and I so I had to explain. :)

I got up after that and gathered up my things. I thanked him for the "coffee" and he thanked me for taking us, for the movie and for the music. :) I gave him a hug on the way out the door and headed to my car to head home. It was now about 6:20pm.

I had left my cell phone to charge in the car this entire time and figured someone would be calling me about dinner. What I didn't expect was that one of those missed calls was from Ray. I tried and tried to get a hold of him before I drove off but he didn't answer. So I headed home.

When I got home I tried calling again with no success. I then called the restaurant and was put on hold. Two minutes later I just hung up. I waited a bit and tried to call Ray again. While I was trying to call Ray back I got a call from Grandma asking about dinner. She had invited us over but I was thinking that if Ray was inviting us to dinner we should all go to save on dishes and other frustrations. So I told grandma that I would call her back in a few minutes.

I finally called the restaurant again using my home phone and asked for Ray. I chatted with Ray a bit and he was indeed offering up dinner. He had promised the to pay last week but wasn't able to and I ended up paying for the meal myself (which I couldn't afford). He felt bad and was offering again for me to come in. I asked if I could bring my grandma too and he was fine with that.

After I got off the phone I called grandma back and asked her if she would mind going to pizza instead. She said that she hadn't cooked up anything really so she was fine with it. We got our things together and everyone in the car quickly so that we could get there with time to eat.

Ray treated us to their largest pizza with all the meats on it. We all had a good time visiting with him and consuming good pizza. I got a few videos of Ray and some of other people we know there like Richard. Finally around 9:30 it was getting late and grandma wanted to head home. I thanked Ray again for dinner and we headed home.

I really had a good day today and am content with spending my time where I did. I hope this is a good preview of the year to come. :D
