Books!

Random fun fact of the day!

I’m trying to improve my writing skills (today’s exercise: opening lines). So I grabbed 5 books off my shelf. Bear in mind that most of my reading these days is done electronically, or borrowed from the public library, so I don't often buy books anymore. This is what I ended up with:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" --> "It was a far, far better rest than I have ever known."

"Hey, surprise ending!" Said Uncle Jesse on Full House after reading the first and the last lines in A Tale of Two Cities. For some reason I never forgot that.

You know, I picked up Harry Potter back when it first came out to see what all the fuss was about and didn't see what the fuss was all about. I kind of didn't give it much thought since then till last summer when I weirdly picked up the fifth book spontaneously and thought it was amazing. I got completely hooked after that. I dunno, the first one didn't really reel me in, I guess.

Haha, Full House, that brings back memories!

Better late than never on the Potter books! Did you go back and read the rest of them after Book 5? The third book was my absolute favorite and remains that way to this day. I still break it out and re-read it occasionally.

Oh yes, I couldn't put them down. I read 6 and 7 after that in no time at all like the rest of my life was somehow interfering with the time I had for reading them. It wasn't just that I enjoyed the books, I got the impression that Rowling is a very intelligent person and a feminist, and that her writing was likely affected by her experience coping with the death of her mother (she was probably around the age I am now when she started writing them, wasn't she? I'd have been devastated). I fell so hard in love with Sirius! haha! I did read the third book because I wanted to read more Marauders stuff, and I was partway through the fourth but had to put it down because it felt somehow wrong to me to keep going backward after I'd already read the bitter end. (Of course I'd already watched all the movies long before, who hadn't - and while they have their own merit, by which I mean vast fan service in the fourth movie and some in others - they really are the mere shadow of the books. The fifth movie bored me to tears when I saw it; the ( ... )

Nothing wrong with being verbose :)

Sirius was my all-time favorite character (followed very closely by Hermione). I was never able to get much into the movies, though I've seen some of them. It could be because I'm kind of not a movie-watching person. I prefer books and tv shows. I really loved the fourth book -- it appealed to the action/adventure lover in me.

Ugh, that was a ridiculously rambling and meandering response...where is my head today?

I think after my initial not-getting-into-HP on the first book, I wasn't particularly interested in seeing the movies. My friend dragged me to it and then another friend dragged me to the second, my boyfriend at the time dragged me to the third, then I felt like I just had to keep seeing them. I really enjoyed the fourth cause Harry was naked in the bathtub and there was all this fan service and the twins wrestled on the floor and there was all this other good stuff. Then I just kept watching the movies when they came out sort of out of a personal tradition I'd made for myself and thought the 5th and 6th were super dull, and of course the 7th was amazing.

I saw the fourth movie on an airplane - I guess that explains how I missed the fan service-y bits... I did go see the first part of the seventh movie in the theatres. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the second, because I know how it ends and sad things make me sad.
