Books!

Random fun fact of the day!

I’m trying to improve my writing skills (today’s exercise: opening lines). So I grabbed 5 books off my shelf. Bear in mind that most of my reading these days is done electronically, or borrowed from the public library, so I don't often buy books anymore. This is what I ended up with:

Michael Crichton, Timeline - "He should never have taken that shortcut" - I picked this up at a used bookstore during a trip to Europe 8 years ago. Admittedly, it’s not one of my favorites, but I did enjoy it and I thought a mainstream commercial author would be a good to have as part of the sample.

Jonathon L. Howard - Johannes Cabal: The Fear Institute - "It was not such a peculiar house in and of itself." -  I love all the Cabal books to pieces. (I haven’t actually read this one yet, because I’m afraid it will consume my life, and I’m having so much fun with Hetalia right now)

Philip Pullman - The Subtle Knife - "Will tugged at his mother's hand and said, "Come on, come on..." - It’s been ages since I’ve read this. I should probably do a re-read one of these days.

Jim Butcher - Dead Beat - "On the whole, we're a murderous race." - I love this whole series, though I’m still a bit behind. This is the only one I own, the rest I get from the library.

J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone - "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much." - Does this one really need an explanation? I read this for the first time in 2000 and never looked back.
