versipellis did a list of her top ten Action Girls which seemed a pretty cool meme to me. Of course, I instantly got rather confused about the definition. Is an "action girl" just someone who is pretty cool or someone who actively kicks ass in a physical way? I kind of settled for the physical ass-kickers on the whole for this list - maybe tomorrow I'll do a list of my favourite intellectual awesome girls! (and probably going "Omg, I forgot so-and-so!" because I always forget SOMEONE when I do these lists. Every time. Usually someone stupidly obvious. That having been said however ...
1) Ace (Dorothy) (Doctor Who) Because really, how could any list not contain Ace? She blows things up with a happy smile and has so much FUN traveling through time and space. (in my world, Ace left the Doctor all happy and smug and NONE of the fates extended canon seems to offer happens at all. Cause dude, arragh.)
2) Rachel Berenson (Animorphs). I've just been reading them so it's not at all surprising that she's on the list. Rachel isn't my favourite Animorph but I love watching her journey through the books and she's really amazingly brave. And kind of crazy. I quite like kind of crazy fairly regularly. Anyone who picks up their own severed arm and beats people with it has GOT to be a bit of an awesome asskicker. (that was when she was particualarly insane I feel I should note)
3) Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward. (Thunderbirds. The only reason she DOESN'T kick ass physically is because of puppet limitations (and in the movie, she does!) So she just trounces everyone with sheer awesome instead. Lady Penelope was a woman I wanted to be as a child. She got to wear pretty things and just be generally epic and awesome and boss everyone around. Made of total awesome.
4) Mara Jade. (Star Wars) Mara was definitely one of the contributing factors to me getting into the expanded 'verse. I like that when we meet her, she's as capable as she is without using the Force - it's just a nice bonus for her. She's just really made of quite a lot of win and I don't care if this makes her potentially a bit Sueish. She's just way too awesome for that to bother me and I DO NOT ACCEPT certain displeasing facts about later books. NOT. AT. ALL.
5) Himiko Kudou (Getbackers) She's one of the few girls in Getbackers who really does kick ass on her own terms and even though she needs rescuing more than she should (shonen manga *eyeroll*) she definietely gets some asses kicked when she's allowed to go all the way. And anyone who can lose the amount of clothing she does and still lay waste to everyone around her gets points in my book!
6) Leela (Doctor Who) Another ass-kicker with a smile. Leela is a bit too awesome for the Fourth Doctor who does not appreciate how cool she is. She's wonderfully loyal to him, gets the job done and is very calm about it, while doing her best to learn and work her way through the different technology she encounters, putting it in her own frame of reference.
7) Keladry of Mindelan (Protector of the Small) Kel is without a doubt my favourite of the Tortall women (maybe even my favourite of all of Tamora Pierce's protagonists.) I love her thought process and her practicality and the fact that she's so strong all on her own merits. She puts up with so much crap and she does it so well. Kel = made of win.
8) Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) I always liked Buffy herself, even though I know a lot of people really don't fancy her that much as a character. I love how she manages to stay strong and cope through such awful things and the way she keeps going. I like that she does strive to learn, even if she complains sometimes. Given her lot, that seems fair enough to me.
9) River Tam (Firefly) I'm terribly fond of River. Something about the mixture of total raging insanity and the awesome abilities is really interesting to me. And what we see of what seems to be her "real" self is interesting too. There's something really fascinating about River.
10) Zoe Washburne (Firefly) I love Zoe. She's one of those characters that I just love everything about. I love her relationship with Wash and the way she gets on with everything and tells Mal when he's being an idiot while backing him up at the same time.
Have decided to take part in
2x5obsessions, mostly because they have rather awesome prompts and so it looked fun. And might encourage me to do some more writng, even if it's "only" fanfic. Writing is a bit slow at the moment which is annoying. So ... here I go again!
