Car troubles

So I need some advise: Should I fix my '99 Pontiac Sunfire so it can limp around for another year or two or should I look for some other cheap car? My sunfire needs to have its brakes fixed, the engine looked at, and the transmission flushed. This is what I know and I haven't even taken it to the mechanic yet. The brakes are shot and the engine ( Read more... )

I think I'd recommend getting a new car, but cars aren't my thing, so don't just follow my advice..

So what are you going to do after graduation? Specifically, what do you think the chances are that you'll be anywhere around upstate New York or St. Louis?

I have no idea. Absolutely none. Career fair is in September and that _might_ give me a better idea. I have a very tentative contact elsewhere that I need to check up on too. My plans are so far up in the air as to be non-existent.

Shame you're not a PHP programmer. I could totally help you get a job here in Buffalo.

Brakes are minor - I had my buddy replace my brakes and rotors a couple of years back for about $200 (parts, and a 24 case of beer for the labor). Engine... Could be pricey, could be cheap, could be nothing... I don't know enough about engines, personally, to tell you what the problem is. Could be as simple as replacing the sparkplugs and wires (cheap), but it could be a really big problem. I'm kind of leaning toward finding another car, since your car already has 140K miles on it. The problem is, you might inherit someone else's car problems, which might be greater than the problems your own car has... It's a tough situation. I'd say, take it to a trusted mechanic and have it looked at and then make your decision. For all you know, repairing it could be done cheaply.

Transmission flush is somewhat costly, and may not resolve your issues. Conversely, transmission REPAIR is insanely costly, unless youse knows guys ( ... )

I'd recommand fixing the problems, even though I have no idea what might be wrong with your car.

But then, I'm an idiot and gets attached to inanimate objects...
