Car troubles

So I need some advise: Should I fix my '99 Pontiac Sunfire so it can limp around for another year or two or should I look for some other cheap car? My sunfire needs to have its brakes fixed, the engine looked at, and the transmission flushed. This is what I know and I haven't even taken it to the mechanic yet. The brakes are shot and the engine keeps dying when I am at stop signs unless I lightly touch the gas. I think the O2 sensor is shot but that may not be the only thing. The transmission is going but a flush may help it limp along. It has 140K miles or so (maybe 120. I can't remember right now). It will be at least a grand fixing it and I have to drive it down to TX to get it inspected so it is legal.

On the other hand, I don't know when (or if!) I will have money for another car. $4000 is the absolute max I think I can spend and I won't be able to even start looking until I get that $4000 (land deal that is promised but getting the money is always another matter). My guy got a really nice Audi for $4400 including repairs so that is nice to know. However, he looked for months and got really lucky.

What do ya'll think? I graduate in May but my credit isn't good enough to be able to get anything for a while. Have to have capital to fix credit problems and good credit is so useful when buying a car.

But yeah, May and I am out of here. That has to be good news, right?
