Hyung

Jongdae was born during the fall of 1992, as the first child of the Kims’. Being the only child, he was raised with utmost love from the family. Jongdae frequently vision himself as a beloved prince of a kingdom and no one could ever usurp his position. But that all changed when he turned three.

Jongin was born in the midst of winter, as the second child of the Kims’. He was unexpected, but nevertheless welcomed into his family, saved for someone who claims to be the prince of a kingdom and Jongin is merely a peasant, unworthy of his attention.

‘Stop following me around!’
That was Jongdae’s daily words to Jongin.
‘But you’re my hyung! I want to follow my hyung! ’
This was Jongin’s daily response.

As the two brothers grew up, the relationship between them never did improve, even more when Jongin had a growth spurt and towered over Jongdae. Jongdae’s friend never quite gotten the animosity Jongdae had for Jongin, because according to him, Jongin is the cutest little brother ever.
‘He’s so cute! He’s like a lost puppy following you around! Stop torturing your little brother!’
That was Baekhyun, his long-time best friend. Jongdae briefly contemplates dropping best friend status solely for the fact that Baekhyun thinks that his brother is cute.

Wait. He’s not even cute. Baekhyun is blind; and disowning a friend due to his disability seems a little inhumane.

Due to his petite size, Jongdae is often the target of bullies. He was fortunate to have Baekhyun, whom despite his equally petite size, had a black belt in Taekwondo and could easily take down people twice his size. But Baekhyun had been sick today, and Jongdae had to attend choir practice alone. It was near ten in the night when practice ended, with few people wandering in the streets. The night was chilly and no one is out on the streets. It was a little disconcerting, to say the least. He was almost home when three silhouettes appear from the alleyway. It was Chansung and his two minions, Junho and Junsu.
The trio often coerces the weaker students in the school into giving them money, and without Baekhyun, he is definitely considered weak in their eyes.

Jongdae sighed, and was about to fish out his wallet when someone appeared stood beside him. It was Jongin.
‘New bodyguard?’ Chansung sneered and his two minions guffawed.
‘Don’t you dare touch Jongdae hyung.’
‘So what if we do?’
‘Then be prepared to take me down first.’

The two minions charged forward, but before they could do anything, Jongin had them in an arm lock. They struggled, but Jongin had a tight grip on them. Looking upon this, Chansung paled and ran away.
Jongin looked at Jongdae; and upon his nod, released the two minions, who took off after their leader immediately.

‘How do you know I’ll be here?’
‘Baekhyun told me that there are bullies around, and he’s not around today so I came in place of him.’
‘Oh…’
Jongdae feels awkward, how do you talk to someone that you usually ignore.

‘Hyung, why won’t you acknowledge me? I just want to be your brother.’ Jongin pours out words that he wanted to say a long time ago, and was met with a long silence. Does Jongdae still hate him?

‘I guess I could promote you from peasant to royal guard, and your duty is to protect the prince, which is me.’

Jongin grinned. Sure, his brother has yet to fully warm up to him, but this is definite step forward in their relationship. One day they’ll be true brothers. For now, Jongin is contented. Jongin slung an arm around Jongdae as they walked home, much to the latter’s chagrin.

Some dreams stay dreams. But if we dream too long, they may do come true.

“I had a dream, mama!”
“What was it, my dear Jongin?”
“I dreamt that Jongdae hyung finally acknowledge me!”
