Okay, so I've been hearing about this movie for quite a while now, and since Sean Maher is the star, I knew I was going to have to watch it some day, no matter how bad people were saying it is. It was on again last night, so I sat myself down to enjoy some Sean screentime. Let me tell you something. This movie was beyond bad. It was awful. The worst made for TV movie I think I've ever seen. And that's saying something, since made for TV movies are generally pretty bad.
First off, Michelle Trachtenberg's character, Carrie Beal, was a self-centered, selfish twit! Paraphrasing here, but: 'I've been with my boyfriend/fiancee for eight years and I don't love him anymore, but I can't tell him. Oh no, he dived off the pier because of me and broke his neck and now I can't leave him. He told me to leave so guess I'll run off to New York and find myself.' And on and on and on. Geez, girl! Grow up! You're 23, not 13!
Then there's Sean's character, Kilroy Frazier, what an arrogant, condescending, closed-off, secretive SOB! And he's 35 years old! What's he doing hitting on 23 year old twits? Oh, wait, right, women his age wouldn't put up with that kind of crap. In his defense, he did begin opening up at the end of the movie, only to have Carrie figuratively knock him flat by dumping him. I was finally feeling some sympathy for him, and the movie was over! Foul!
So, Carrie in New York. What can I say? Nothing good. She has no job, is sharing a loft apartment with a guy she met back home somehow (I forget how that was contrived) and several other of his friends, only one of whom we ever see--a gal called Lane who was very interesting, complains constantly about not being able to pay the rent, and yet gets accepted immediately into a fashion design school. Ain't happening! I know. My niece wants to be a fashion designer, and those NY schools are among the most expensive and sought after ones in the nation. Some little twit isn't going to be able to walk in off the street and dazzle them with her brilliance, I don't care what her GPA at her former school was. There ain't gonna be room for her.
And then there's the whole Carrie/Kilroy relationship. She was introduced to him by a mutual friend back home in Wisconsin. He makes arrogant, condescending remarks, tells her to look him up if she's ever in NY--and she does! *headdesk* They spend several hours together, and she jumps him. *headdesk again* And that's about the extent of their relationship--using each other for sex. Even if she did later tell him she loved him. (Stupid twit doesn't know what love is!) And the worst part was...there was absolutely no on-screen chemistry between them.
Speaking of Kilroy, what kind of nickname is that, anyway? Come on, he wasn't born in the 40's or 50's when that name was slightly well-known ('Kilroy was here' and all that); he was born in the 70's (presumably 1970 if his character's age and the movie release date have anything to say in the matter) and people didn't use that name in the 70's.
Also, what did he do for a living? He's 35 years old, rents an expensive apartment, and all he does is sit around and read or go out and play pool. Doesn't he work? Or is he living off Daddy's money, even though he can't stand his parents?! *shudder*
One other nitpic...it was December in NY and Carrie's running around in a sleeveless top that barely covers her midriff. WTF? It's cold in NY in December! People wear long sleeves and sweaters! There's usually snow on the ground! *more headdesk*
Oh, one other thing...the gift Carrie gave Kilroy for Christmas? I think he hated it. *eg*
So was there anything I did like about this movie? Well, there was this one scene, towards the middle, Carrie had just been accepted to the school and she was celebrating with Kilroy and her roommates. Everyone was happy except Kilroy. He was in a mood. It was such an exact mirror of the scene at the beginning of the movie when Carrie was on the pier with her friends and she was the one in the mood. And guess what? The clueless twit didn't even notice until he walked out of the room!
But wasn't there anything else you liked about this movie, you ask? Well...Sean half-dressed (yummy), Sean speaking fluent French (why is that sexy?), Sean smiling more often than in Firefly/Serenity (heart flutter), Sean's acting (especially at the end), Sean... *bg*
So my advice to you is to skip this movie entirely, unless you can bear the pain of a lousy script for a few good moments of Sean. *g*
