apparently i missed a crit for cfda competition concept boards? so by this wednesday i have to have a concept board with of course, color story, fabric swatches (ieeeeeee--i won't be able to get to new york city again until the middle of wintersession break, probably), and something like 25-30 sketches of pieces to present to my professors. this cfda thing worries me because i'd like to win one of the scholarships this year ... as opposed to the per usual otis/parsons/fit/academy of art "university" student. why hasn't risd won in the past, oh, eight years or so? no one can figure it out, but perhaps there's just something wrong with the system in which they vote for entries to be sent off. i don't know. but at the very least i'd like the chance to win.
i'm thinking that in this case, i may need to enlist the help of a friend in graphic design--thank god i have a handful of those--and see if they can't help me with suggestions for my presentation--something i really need to work on. i generally hate the idea of doing books, especially when it comes down to projects for class, because it's difficult to put them into a portfolio afterward. but i think in this case, the packaging needs to be amazing and clever ... as do the designs. but we'll see.
as for the concept: after speaking with derek bradford about the architectural concept of gravitas, i kept on thinking ... how can i deal with gravitas in fashion design? this is a challenge because while there may be rather serious fabrics and materials, and while fashion should consider function (at least in my mind), it also needs to have fantasy. it's hard to strike the balance between the two ... but i want to try for the cfda. i tried my hand at designing semi-convertible clothing last year, as a less experienced design student, but i feel like i can do it better now ... i also love the idea of doing travel clothes. those of you in my classes know this. with my added new interest in textile technology--ie. fabrics that wick away sweat, fabrics that breathe better, etc etc--i think this would be a perfect thing to do. basically the concept will incorporate all of these things, but the major fantasy included is travel. a collection utilizing serious materials, and very much about function, lest we forget style.
so we'll see. i need to do some construction research in order to figure out a few things ... and i'm not exactly sure how i'll come up with 25-30 sketches for them ...
meanwhile i also have to be designing a menswear collection for my independent study, and put together a concept for my jacket collection. fortunately the latter isn't due until after wintersession break ... of course i also plan on going skiing with michael again during the break ... and then of course there's celebrating valentine's day ... oh, and getting him a gift! i have no clue! (i was going to get an ipod shuffle for him, but when we went to the mac store the other day so that i could get a case for my ipod, he ended up buying it for himself ...)
