Today was District Tournament for Badminton across the county. Gables was placed with Broker T, Miami High, Miami Springs, and Northwestern. Broker T didn't have a team so that meant who ever were with them first round had a bye (automatic win). Miami High only had that one Boy Singles player, like always. (I think that is really cool that the coach from Miami High takes the boy to the games and sponsors the sport although he is the only one.) Miami High forfeited all the other games hence giving people byes in the 1st round. Miami Springs had a full team and Northwestern didn't have a full team. Basically is a battle between Miami Springs and Coral Gables.
You should know that this tourney was by double elimination. Meaning if you loose twice you are out of the tourney. Also only 1st and 2nd place winners qualify for Greater Miami Athletic Competition (GMAC) aka County's!
We get to Springs at 7 am, we are the 1st ones there and we were like Okay?!?! We stretch and warm-up. Let the games begin.... first up Boys Singles: Martin (Gables) played Chris (Springs) and wins. Two qt guys playing...wow! He then plays then Miami High boy, looses. Putting him in the consolation bracket (aka losers bracket). He then plays Chris again and looses. Taking Martin out of the tournament. That’s okay because Martin played VERY well considering that he has been playing doubles all year and just recently started playing singles. (*mauhz* for Martin) I don't know how Seing-Meing games went but I know he played against Chris after Martin and he lost, taking him out of the tournament. Good jog S-M.
Girl's singles: Janet and Cami. They both get byes on their first round. Eventually since the two were winning Cami and Janet had to play each other. Cami looses to Janet putting her in the consolation bracket but then she stays alive to play Janet once more in the final round. Janet gets 1st Cami 2nd. You go girls! :)
Boys Doubles: Tibow (sorry can't spell his name correctly) and Manny win their games and so do Benny and Danny. Just like Janet and Cami they had to play each other. Benny and Danny go down to the looser bracket. They remain alive to make it to the final round, where they play Manny and Tibow again. Benny and Danny get 1st and Tibow and Manny get 2nd. :)
Girls Doubles: Karina I saw you play your first game and you go girl! Karina did a great job today and I can't forget about Aki. Those shots were great! The two of them win their first game. Go down to the looser bracket when they play Jessie and Su (Gables). But once again Gables keeps it up and shows the world we are not quitters. Karina and Aki lost to Jessie and Su in the final round. Jessie and Su get 1st and Karina and Aki get 2nd. Great job girls!
As you are reading this you might be wondering what happen to Uzma's game??? Well... this is what happen...
First round Juanito (my mix partner) and I get a bye. So then that puts us to play Springs in the 2nd round, but that was our 1st match. Our 1st game we lost 12-15. We were cold at the beginning and at the end we started to bring it together. Second game we won 15-12. YES! We split. (Matches are the best out of 3 games. Since Spring won one and we won one, we go onto a third game) God knows what happen in the third game we lost 7-15. BOOM! The consolation bracket. Meaning we have to win every single match from this point on to make into GMAC. So we play our second game, which was the other Springs Mix team. We won that one by playing smart! :) Then our 3rd game, will determine who will go on to GMAC and who will get 3rd place. All I have to say is WOW! We played an awesome game. Juanito and I messed up here and there but we won the first game 15-11. The second game was close. They changed up their game and they started to read us a bit. But that was okay; we kept up our game and changed some things here and there. At one pointed we started loosing like 9-12. That didn't matter we brought it up 12-all (or 12-12). This is where I got nervous. My heart is racing, I'm breathing hard. Trying to keep focus and calm is quite hard under pressure. At around this time Juanito smashes at the boy. The boy blocks and it comes back to me. I drop and the girl didn't get there in time and hit a weak shot out. Actually neither the girl nor I noticed that the block was good. Juanito was like “get it get it get it.” Then the boy was like “GO!” But too late her shot wasn’t good. It was now 14-12. All we needed was one more point and we were done. However, we didn't. :( We lost our serve and they caught up to 14. We choose to set, meaning we play three more points. They serve, they lost their serves and we get the bird back. (Side note: a bird is what we play with, the thing we hit. It is a.k.a shuttlecock) Score is now 0-0 or 14-14. It's 1-0 then 2-0. I'm shaking. This is it! We make this point we go on to GMAC. This is what I wanted. I wanted to place in Districts so I can go on to GMAC. Palms are a little sweaty, trying to focus. I have my mean, determined face on. Juanito serves play rally and BOOM! He hits it down to the side and we WON!!! :-D Juanito jumps in joy and I stood there for a moment embracing that I am going to counties. Hugs and Kisses for everyone. Now we had to play Luis and Mel (Gables) to determine who gets 1st and 2nd place. Juanito and I got a 10-minute break and then started our last and final game for the day. We didn’t really care for that game and started like messing around. Plus Luis and Mel and more rest then we did so they were in good shape. We lost 5-15 1-15. Oh well! Luis and Mel get 1st and Juanito and I get 2nd. But it is all good. Gables is District Champs, once more and I am going to GMAC!!!
Going to GMAC is like going to states for those non-badminton people. Miami-Dade County is the only county in the state that plays badminton at a high-school level. So technically if you win GMAC you win states.
Palmetto make sure you bring it to GMAC. You might have won once at our house but GMAC is where it counts. Having an undefeated season is only the icing on the cake when you are GMAC champs.
Thank-you to the most wonderful team in the world, Gables Badminton you are the best! I love ya’ll very much. For those who didn't play this year as much as you would have like, ex. Jackie, if you are going to take my spot, take it to the top and don't let it drop!! :)
Good luck to all those going to GMAC, See you there.
P.S. If you have any questions about what is stated above about badminton and how it's played please do not hesitate to ask.
