So my cousin (yet another of them) and his wife are pregnant. And it looks as though I'll be getting to help throw a baby shower when I go to visit my family during July. (Hopefully I'll also be getting to go to a water park like
Schlitterbahn or
Hurricane Harbor and maybe get some fun shopping in with my mom as well.)
So anyway, baby showers. I think that in order for these to be appropriately literal the mother to be should be marched outside and hosed down with a sprinkler, but I don't think I'll be able to convince many other people that this is a good idea. I do think that pregnant women can use all the ooh-ing and ahh-ing and gifts and love, because let's face it, they feel tired, weighed down, and rather blimp-like, usually. I also think it's great that people give you gifts to help you through setting up for a baby, (not an inexpensive task by any means).
I've actually never been to a baby shower before, though I have been to LOTS of wedding showers the last few years. (the first one I went to was my own; this is luckily a trend that won't be repeating itself for the baby variety of shower) I've heard plenty of ridiculous stories though. I don't personally feel like wasting perfectly good candy bars and diapers (that are just going to fill up a nasty landfill somewhere) to play the "smell the diaper" game. In fact, any "game" that involves things that look/smell/feel like baby waste of any kind are pretty much out, if I can have my way. Honestly, if it was my shower I'd much prefer that any "games" like that would be trashed, the extra money could go into a diaper or baby food fund, and we could just play scrabble, or baby mad libs, or something fun that didn't waste anything. Maybe I'm just a spoil sport though. What do ya'll think?
Also, the question of appropriate baby gifts. I assume that things like blankets/changing pads/diaper bags are safe, but what about clothes? Couldn't it be quite possible that the baby would be too big/too small to wear some of them? (Obviously if the little bugger is too small you can just wait, except then you get into seasonality, etc.)
Oh, that reminds me, I have given someone a baby gift before, it was a little knitted hat. It was my first attempt, and let's just say that once I was done sewing it up, I realized there was no way that it would fit over its intended recipient's (Philip) head.
Alright, that's all the baby I can take at one sitting, I think. Happy Monday, everyone.
