A Day in the life of a Chicken

Today we went out to a chicken farm and collected some samples. This is the 2nd time I've been out, and boy has it been a learning experience. We got up close and personal with a few chickens because we had to collect cloacal swabs (What fun!) At least we could see in this house, the last chicken house was almost completely dark!

I still won't stop eating chicken but... I do agree they are disgusting (as most birds are, IMO) animals. My great grandparents used to own a farm with chickens, pigs, cows, etc and the chickens were the worst!

At least you are doing a variety of things with this new job. :)

I wouldn't say that they are necessarily disgusting, but when you cram 20,000 of them into a building it can get pretty nasty fast. Of course, if you crammed 20,000 people into a building and they each had just enough room to settle down onto the floor, that would get extremely disgusting as well.

My cousins grew up on and still live on a chicken farm. When I was younger we would visit them at all times of the year, but the chicken houses were the worst smelling in the summer when it was hot. Let's just say that after spending a few days with them I would avoid chicken for a good month after going home. Now, I've just gotten used to the smell and it doesn't bother me that much. I think the only smell worse than the chicken houses is the pit where they throw the dead chickens.
