Reading a post in fanficrants this morning--about mpreg and how exactly does the baby get out of there etc--and the writer of the post said I mean, with the kind of vagueness I typically see from you people, my imagination fills in the blanks with how female hyenas give birth*...yeeouch. And someone took slight offense to "you people" and man, WHAT? When the ( Read more... )

See, and I see a lot of the bad guys being cast as Americans, usually of the stereotype redneck southerner variety. Which is wrong in a lot of ways, not just because it's an American, but wtf is with every evil dude out there talking like he's been kicked off of Hee Haw? The accents I hate a lot are actually most of the American East Coast accents, like Massachusetts. Oh my god, so annoying. But still, at least to me, when an American character is cast as the villain, they're usually these idiot, pervert, skull fucked rednecks while British villains, though evil, have class. They're monumentally fucked up bad guys, sure, but they're like badass and smart evil. Which is cool and all, but very skewed.

It is prejudiced, yeah. But it's also just unnecessary a lot of the time when I see it around on line. Someone says something you don't agree with and think sounds arrogant and foolish, then tell them they or THAT is so American. Maybe that person's French, huh? Because they can be really rude. Or hell, British, because much as I love some people who are British, y'all can be arrogant asses, too. The point is, you never know, and then it just becomes something you say to be a jerk.

But then I've lived in the south here, too, and I know the kind of prejudice that people from there can get just within our own country. I moved back to Washington for a while after living for about 5 years in Louisiana and I carried a little bit of an accent with me for a while. I still use terms and phrases that are uniquely southern things and don't make much sense people who haven't spent time there. When I first moved back, I got a lot of "Where are you from? Your accent is sooo cute!" from people. I even got that shit when applying for jobs, but of course they were never hiring when I asked. Because it's cute, but it also marks me as more stupid than the average bear, too. So then the south gets a lot of shit from other American people, then outside of it, they are the stereotype embodiment of the average American gun-toting, beer-guzzling, wife-beating, inbred trailer trash.

I don't know that it's penis envy lol, but I don't know what it is. If I were from somewhere else right now, I don't think I'd be envious of us. Our shit is fucked up, for serious. But being assholes to citizens, who have almost zero control over any of that shit and are catching the brunt of it all at home, just because they are from some place is seriously ignorant. If someone's being a dick, chances are s/he would be a dick no matter where they were from.

Prejudice is universal, it's true - the key is recognising it, even (or especially) in yourself. Then hopefully you can overcome it.

Now can I be a classy bitch villain, please?
