Part 12 “Kei…”
“Wake up Kei..”
Inoo twitches as he feels somebody is touching hand. Slowly he comes to his consciousness.
“You… you are…”
“Yes, it’s me,” the handsome man with brunette hair smiles at him. “It’s me, Kota.”
“Kota?” Inoo sits at instant. He keeps staring at the boy without blinking. “Oh no… I’m officially crazy now… no no no… what should I do? Sensei… sensei!!!!” he yells, hoping that somebody will come into his room and free him from the hallucination. He turns to press the emergency button.
But Yabu stops him.
“You are not crazy Kei,” Yabu whispers close to the boy’s face.
“But you are dead!”
“To them, but not to you.”
Inoo frowns. Though he lost his memories he is pretty sure that he is sane.
“I live in you Kei, in your heart,” Yabu kisses Inoo’s hand.
Slowly he pulls the boy into his arm. Odd enough, Inoo didn’t refuse. It seems like he is longing to be hug that way- by this person named Yabu Kota that he has been dreaming of for a long time.
“You heart miss me Kei, even without your mind realizing it,” Yabu strokes Inoo’s head.
Inoo gently rubs his face on the boy’s chest- in which he didn’t feel awkward at all doing it. The warmth feels so natural, and full of love.
“It feels so familiar isn’t it?”
Inoo nods.
“It’s real Kei,” Yabu lifts Inoo’s chin, so that they are now facing each other. “The love you feel for me is real, the love you have for the kids is real- even without you knowing us.”
“Live Kei… you have to continue living. Face your fear, and embrace the future. Fill your emptiness with happiness, and move on. Isn’t that what you always told our Ainosuke?”
Inoo’s eyes becoming tearful. “Why do you have to die?”
“I don’t have the answer for that question,” Yabu wipes the tears that are now wetting the pretty boy’s cheek. “I’m sorry that I left, but you and I know that our feelings will stay for eternity.”
“Be brave Kei. Get back on your feet. Our sons need you,” Yabu pulls out the silver ring from his left ring finger and put it on Inoo’s palm. “You have to go on. Remember Kei, our love never dies. It stays in here,” he touches the boy’s chest. “I’ll watch over you, always…”
“Please don’t go,” Inoo begs as Yabu gets up of the bed. He couldn’t explain it, but he is so scared to be left behind- again.
“I told you right, I live in you,” Yabu kisses Inoo’s forehead for the last time. “I’m going back to the place I belong.”
“Where is that?”
Yabu smiles. “Your heart.”
Inoo opens his eyes. His pillow is all wet from his tears. He sits up and looks around the empty ward room. No, nobody is there. He is all by himself.
He opens his left fist- revealing a silver ring that he just saw a moment ago.
He was here! He was real!!!
Inoo touches his left chest, where Yabu puts his hand on earlier. “Are you there Kota?” he talks to himself. Inoo brings his knees closer to his chest and wraps his hands around it, sobbing.
Why? Why am I missing a person whose face I couldn’t even remember? Yabu Kota, what had you done to me?
The door suddenly swings open.
“Inoo-san, did you see Ainosuke?” Kudo pants as he asks. Clearly he has been running on his way to the ward.
Inoo shakes his head left and right. “What happened?”
“Is he here??” Hikaru walks in not long after, sweating all over.
“No,” Kudo replies.
“Sh*t!!” Hikaru curses. “I’m calling the police!”
“They will only takes action if the person is missing for more than 24 hours,” Kudo reminds the boy.
“Who’s missing?” Inoo begins to get panic. “What’s going on here?”
Kudo and Hikaru looks at each other. Both of them are feeling a little reluctant to reveal the truth.
“Kei, listen to me,” Hikaru sits at the bedside. “Ainosuke and Ryu went missing.”
“WHAT??”
“Stay calm…” Kudo reminds the boy. “Everybody is searching for them. Don’t worry, we’ll find them.”
Inoo’s heart is beating fast. His tension is rising, he is now filled with worries.
“Kei, do you remember any places that Ainosuke might go?” Hikaru asks.
“Place?”
“Em, anything at all! Do you guys have any secret place or memorable place or any place... yeah! Basically where do you think we can find them?”
Inoo scratches his head. He can’t even remember his own children, left alone to remember such a trivial thing.
Kota… help me...
“Kei!!!” Hikaru urges.
“Yaotome-san, don’t push him too much,” Kudo grabs Hikaru’s wrist and head to the exit. “Don’t worry Inoo-san! We’ll find them!” the two steps out.
“Cotto matte!”
Hikaru and Kudo stops moving.
Inoo puts on his slippers. “I know this sounds crazy, but I think I can help you to 'feel' the place they might go.”
"Indeed it does sounds crazy Kei," Hikaru turns around. "How can you 'feel' a place?"
"Memories comes and goes, the emotions we felt stays within us. I'll prove that to you. Bring me along."

Ainosuke pushes the stroller with his remaining energy, slowly parks it at the nearest bench. The sun has long set, it is all now very windy and chilly.
The boy takes a look at his little brother who is sleeping soundly in the baby stroller, wrapped with multiple layers of blue blankets. Ainosuke picks the silver tumbler, shaking it gently- trying to estimate how much of baby formula left. From the sound and the weight there’s at least half of it remaining.
Hopefully it stays warm.
The wind blows even more. For a moment baby Ryu shivers. Seeing that, Ainosuke takes off his sweater and wraps his brother dearly. He softly pats Ryu’s hip, knowing that the baby finds comfort with that. Ryu gets back to his sleep soon enough.
Ainosuke knows that his act is wrong. He knows that at this very moment all his uncles must be very worried about him and Ryu. But he can’t just do nothing when that man wants to ‘steal’ Ryu from him. No, he can’t allow that. The sorrow of losing papa Yabu is still haunting him. Ainosuke doesn’t want to lose anyone else.
He can’t take Ryu. No one can take Ryu.
Suddenly a loud growl distracts his attention.
It’s his stomach- his empty stomach.
Ainosuke touches his flat tummy. Yes, he was so focused on preparing Ryu’s needs that he forgot about his own. Ainosuke didn’t pack anything for him to snack on- not even a piece of bread. All he had with him is a small bottle of mineral water and nothing more.
Ainosuke looks around. The park is so empty and quiet. He closes his eyes.
“This is the place where papa proposed papa Inoo,” Yabu proudly tells his son. “Do you see that tree there? Both our names are on it.”
Ainosuke runs towards the tree, circling it several times as he searches for his papas’ names.
“Ah!! Ainosuke found it! It’s here!” the boy screams in excitement. “Sugoi…”
“Right??” Yabu joins the boy.
“Is this the tree?” Inoo who is carrying the 4 months-old Ryu approaches the two. “Wow, it’s still here. I thought it’s already gone.”
“Apparently not,” Yabu smiles to his spouse. “Well, should we add your name here?”
“Em!” Ainosuke couldn’t hide his happiness upon hearing Yabu’s suggestion. “Write Ryu’s name too!!”
Yabu nods. He takes out a small blade that he purposely brought with him and starts carving in the middle of the heart-shape mark where his name and Inoo’s name have already exist.
“There you go,” he gives his final touch.
Ainosuke takes a closer look at his papa’s masterpiece.
Yabu Kota
Inoo Kei
Yabu Ainosuke
Yabu Ryutaro
“Papa… this is so nice…” Ainosuke touches the surface of the trunk. “Look! We can fit one more name here! Ne papa, can I have another brother?”
“Wowowo…” Inoo shakes his head left and right. “Proof me that you can take care of Ryu first. Only then we can talk about that.”
Yabu laughs. “Don’t worry Kei. Our Ainosuke is a responsible boy, just like me,” Yabu pats Ainosuke’s head. “He will surely be a great onii-san.”
Ainosuke opens his now wet eyes, rubbing them several times. He gets closer to baby Ryu and begin to pat the boy’s hip again. Ainosuke stares at the huge tree not far from them, the tree where his family’s name lies.
“Don’t worry Ryu,” Ainosuke corrects Ryu’s blanket. “Nii-chan will take care of you.
“Yakusoku.”
