Female Superheroes: The Pitch

Aug 02, 2011 04:46

The folks at Comics Alliance and I have been brainstorming lately about how women are represented in comics. Not just numbers, but the way they are treated as characters. Are they treated as people, or two torpedo boobs and an ass to spice up a story?

Internet Rule 63: If it exists, there is a gender-flipped version of it.
Example

L to R: Superma'am, Batwoman, Wonder Man, Green Lantern, the Flash, Aquama'am, Plastic Ma'am, the Green Arrow,
Hunter, Fox, the Martian  . . . er . . . Personhunter, and Power Boy

The pitch: 6-issue Prestige miniseries. Writer: Ben Edlund. Artist: Alex Ross.

(For the newly initiated, Alex Ross is the gold standard of classy comics art. His realistic, painted superhero pictures are just amazing.)

(Ben Edlund is the evil comic genius behind The Tick, that episode of Angel where he turned into a muppet, some fantastic episodes of Supernatural.)

The characters' costumes will remain as close the the originals as possible. For example, Superwoman and Batwoman will be covered from head to toe (albeit in tight spandex), while Wonder Man will fight crime in a speedo and tiny top that barely covers the nipples of his enormous pecs. Black Canary will wear a black speedo and mesh top, and Hunter will fight crime in a cape and purple assless chaps.

Is it juvenile? Yes. Will demeaning male characters positively impact female ones? Not in a serious story. But as satire? It would be gold, and hopefully it would make people think twice about what they're reading.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some costumes to design.
