In this particular part, Luke has found a box that belongs to Reid under their bed, but what's inside it?
All parts can be read as one shots and are sort of snippets into their lives together :)
(in this part they have been together for about 3 years 7 months)
Luke sat on the bed thinking about the box lying underneath it. He and Reid had been living together for about 2 and a half years and he still hadn’t seen what was inside that box. If he’s honest he’d never really been aware of its existence until the day before when it had caught his eye. He’d pulled it out from under the king-sized bed and seen the word memories scrawled across the top of it in Reid’s messy handwriting, but he’d quickly shoved it back when he’d heard his boyfriend open the front door.
Now he couldn’t seem to get the damned box out of his mind.
He knew he shouldn’t open it. It was Reid’s and was probably private, but this didn’t stop his fingers itching to defy his conscience. So Luke let them.
Once he’d pulled the box out he sat cross-legged in front of it and lightly traced his finger tips over the lid, considering whether he should respect his boyfriend’s privacy and do the right thing by returning the box to where he’d found it. That thought only lasted a second.
He ripped off the lid like a child opening a present on Christmas Day and was greeted by the sight of a few envelopes addressed to Reid in handwriting that Luke recognised as his boyfriend’s mother’s, a few random bits and bobs such as a bracelet and an old fountain pen, an over-full carrier bag and a stack of photos, which were what Luke started with.
The 20 or so photos on the top of the pile were of a young child, who throughout the photos aged until he was vaguely recognisable as Reid. Luke chuckled at the ginger infant. The first thing he noticed was how Reid’s hair had dulled over the years and the ringlets the boy in the photo had were no longer there today. He continued to flick through the photos, which were mainly of family occasions, although there were a few blackmail worthy ones of a very wasted Reid.
Luke stopped dead when he saw a photo of his boyfriend with another man. In the photo Reid looked about twenty-five and the man he was with had his arms loosely round Reid’s waste while kissing him hard on the cheek. Reid was bearing a smile brighter than Luke had never seen on him before, and he looked genuinely ecstatic at just the fact that he just existed. Luke couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy, like a stab in the gut…only worse.
He carried on looking through the photos of Reid and the other man, who was tall and all muscle, with short cut, light brown hair and shocking emerald eyes. Luke felt like his slender frame and boyish charms didn’t even compare to the superhero-like man in the photos. He quickly shuffled the photos back to the first one of Reid and the man flipped it over with shaky hands to reveal a written conversation on the back.
‘Daniel and Reid, together forever.’
‘My God, Reid. You are such a sap.’
‘I know, and you love it.’
‘No, I love you in spite of it’
‘Aaaaw, you love me!’
‘Shut up, and don’t let it go to your head.'
‘I love you too.’
Luke gulped back the green eyed monster at this side of Reid which he’d never been lucky enough to see before, and then he heard a harsh cough behind him.
“That’s my stuff.” Reid said softly, without a hint of anger, gently sitting down on the floor beside Luke.
“I’m sorry.” Luke sighed, turning the photo over again. “You look really happy”
“I look deluded.” Reid mumbled, prying the photo from Luke’s hands and throwing it back in the box, crumpling it in the process.
“What happened?” Luke asked, finally looking up at Reid.
“He left me after three years to go back to his ex.” He squeezed his eyes shut and pinched the bridge of his nose. “He broke my heart.”
Finally, after 3 years and 7 months, Luke understood. He understood why Reid had been so insecure about him going back to Noah, and on some levels, despite the friendship they’d developed since he’d returned to town, probably still was.
“That’s why…?” Luke trailed off, taking Reid’s hand in his and threading their fingers together.
“Yeah.” Reid answered Luke’s unasked question, and then began babbling. “I feel like if I close myself off-become this arrogant, self-centred jerk-no one will be able to hurt me like he did. That’s completely stupid though because I know you could, and that scares me shitless. When I was with him I was young and stupid, but you and me…It’s real. It scared me because you have more power over me and my emotions than he ever did, even though it took me so long to let you in. You could make my whole universe fall down around me with just a click of you fingers and I know it’ll hurt me a million times more than he did. I hate you for making me love you this much.”
Everything made sense now. They both knew that everything was so perfect that it was terrifying and if it ever were to break it would be the end of…everything for both of them.
For Luke, reality suddenly became a lot more real.
“Why do you keep all this stuff if it reminds you of what he did? Do you still…?” Luke began but was quickly interrupted by Reid.
“No, not at all. It’s just…” Reid furrowed his brow for a moment and squeezed Luke’s hand a little tighter, seemingly thinking of the best way to word it. He finally looked Luke dead in the eyes and continued. “He was and important chapter of my life, and he sort of moulded me into the sarcastic jack-ass I’m proud of today.” Reid shook his head when he saw the uncertainty still etched into his boyfriend’s face. He suddenly had an idea and swiftly pulled the bulging carrier bag out of the box and placed it in Luke’s lap.
“What’s this?” Luke asked, looking at the bag with puzzlement, causing Reid to roll his eyes, drag the bag away and begin pulling objects out of it.
“This is a sweet wrapper from a mint I at on bad dad’s plane from Dallas to Oakdale when you first blackmailed me here. This is a beer bottle cap from that ridiculous bar we went to in Dallas the night I first kissed you, oh, and this is a framed photo of you on that bull. That was hilarious.” Luke raised one eyebrow at his boyfriend, who frowned. “I didn’t laugh much back then, Okay! Anyway, here’s a flyer for that snooty French restaurant we went to for our first date and a milk bottle lid from the morning after we first slept together. This is a photo from the opening of the new neurology wing. You’re grinning like a lunatic and I look frankly petrified” Reid pointed to himself and Luke on the group photo and received a chuckle from the younger man.
“You’d just told me you loved me for the first time.” Luke smiled, reminiscing as he stared at the picture.
“I seriously thought you were going to hit me and run.” Reid laughed at his old self and then looked back in the bag, grabbing a few more random objects. “I think this is a print out of the first email you ever sent me. It’s about Noah’s case obviously, but that doesn’t matter, if you’d never of sent it, it would mean you’d of found a different doctor for him and that would mean we wouldn’t be here now. You know, I dismissed it straight away when I first read it and put it into my junk mail box. I never knew things would end up like this. This is the box to the ring you got me for out first anniversary.” Reid dropped the box and fiddled with the ring on his middle finger-it was a bad habit of his-before returning to the bag. “This is the newspaper ad for this apartment, this is the receipt from the first time we went food shopping for our new home and a whole other bunch of stuff but I think you get the picture.”
“You kept all this crap?” Luke asked lovingly, looking at the contents of the bag which Reid had just finished emptying onto the floor. He picked up a crappy key ring which he’d won at a fair and given to Reid about a month ago. Reid had insulted him, complaining that he couldn’t win anything better. He twiddled it between his fingers and then looked back up at the man he loved.
“Yeah.” Reid lifted a hand and laced his fingers through the hair at the nape of Luke’s neck. “All the other stuff in that box is my past and it’s still important because if it hadn’t of happened I wouldn’t be me and I wouldn’t be where I am today, but the stuff in that bag, that’s the most important stuff. That’s my future. Everything in that carrier bag, even down to the crappy chess piece-which I stole from your mother’s chess board the first time you beat me, by the way-is most special stuff in the world to me, because it’s you. Because it’s us.”
“Aww, and you say I’m the 13 year old girl.” Luke chucked despite the tears threatening his eyes.
“I have my moments.” Reid mumbled, leaning in and gently kissing Luke, sucking his lower lip softly into his mouth. He smiled slightly at the fact that when soft moans escape Luke’s lips, even after three and a half years, they still sent impossible bolts of electricity down his spine. It didn’t really make much sense.
Then again Reid thought nothing really does when you’re in a relationship with a ridiculously adorable, spoilt, blonde brat.
Reid loved the fact that Luke was his ridiculously adorable, spoilt, blonde brat, and the thing he loved even more was that Luke was the one who’d finally managed to break his walls down and that neither one was ever going to let the other go.
I'm not sure if I like this part =/ It's abit meh, but anyway :) Hope it's not too dreadful xD
Feedback=Love as always :D Every comment makes me squeel with happiness <3
