The Night That Didn't Happen
It’d been a mistake, Reid knew that.
How do you know it’s a mistake until you actually make it?” he’d thought a long time ago. Apparently, you can know beforehand.
Reid finished rinsing the shampoo out of his hair. He stared at the shower wall for a few seconds before punching it lightly with his fist and leaning his forehead against it.
They’d arrived by train in Chicago earlier that day and rushed to the hospital where Lucinda had been admitted. Holden, Lily and the three young Snyders were already by her bedside when Luke and Reid entered her room. Her body looked frail and pale, but her eyes and smile showed strength and will. She beckoned Luke and Reid over, grasping Luke’s hand in hers as her eyes questioned him. Luke only smiled and sadly shook his head.
Reid didn’t touch her. He merely stood beside Luke and smiled at her. “You know you have to get better. No one else is competent enough to complete your plans for world domination.”
Everyone laughed. Lucinda pointed a red fingernail at him and smiled.
Reid talked to the doctor in charge soon after and discovered she wasn’t as ill as they had all feared. She wasn’t in the clear yet, but she would be in time. Reid and John explained the condition to the Snyders, assuring them that her health would improve but only with the right treatments and care. Reid then excused himself and went out into the waiting room to sit. He wasn’t a relative or a member of the family-at least he hadn’t been since he and Luke had ended things between them-so he felt like he was intruding.
He lost track of time as he answered emails and corresponded with the staff back at the hospital. By the time the Snyders all walked into the waiting room, it was nearly eight in the evening. Lily and Holden were going to stay longer and asked Luke to take Faith, Natalie, and Ethan to the hotel that John had reserved for them. Luke, his eyes tired and red, looked questioningly at Reid. Reid answered him by nodding and standing. He was almost knocked to the floor by Ethan, who rushed and hugged him tightly. Reid patted Ethan’s back. Though Ethan was nearly ten, he was short and just barely reached Reid’s waist.
“She’s gonna be all right, bud,” Reid said quietly.
Ethan held onto Reid’s hand as Luke led them out of the hospital.
John had reserved only two hotel rooms-one for Holden and Lily, the other for Luke and his siblings-so Reid was forced into the last available room, which was next door to Luke’s.
Ethan grinned at Reid upon seeing a door in the room that connected to Reid’s. “We can walk right into each other’s rooms all night. Or we can keep the door open and make the two rooms into one big room!”
“Uh, no, Ethan,” Luke said quickly. “We’re going to sleep.”
“After we eat,” Faith said.
Reid waved at the Snyders. “See you all later, then.” He walked to his room.
“Go ask him,” Faith whispered, pushing Luke towards Reid. “Go!”
“Um, Reid, do you, uh, want to eat dinner with us?”
“Yes!” Ethan shouted.
Reid looked at the eyes staring hopefully at him-Faith’s, Natalie’s, Ethan’s . . . Luke’s.
He wanted to say no. Or maybe he wanted to say yes.
“Okay.”
Two hours later, Reid was preparing for a shower when he heard a knock on the door.
“Luke.”
