Still feeling obligated to Noah for whatever reasons he didn’t know anymore Luke slammed on the brakes, took a time out and got on the proverbial train to Georgia. Why Georgia? He didn’t care, the main thing? Getting away and getting some rest.
Well, somehow he was torn between two men, he loved Noah and he was attracted to Reid sososo attracted to the redheaded grump that he was completely at a loss. Well he wasn't only attracted to Reid, he was falling for him.
And he was right, the moment he stretched himself out, made himself comfortable in his seat and opened his book he didn’t feel upset anymore letting himself be dragged into the world of George Sand.
He didn’t know how long he’d been sleeping but woke up with a start realizing he wasn’t alone anymore. A stranger, a handsome man in his late thirties, was holding his book and smiled pointing at the title: “Interesting choice.”
Three hours , dinner and some beers and sodas later they were still talking, exchanging stories about their family background, growing up, school, Luke’s coming out , first crushes, jobs and choices.
“That’s the thing, you know, I am supposed to make a choice and I can’t…”
“I am all ears and I have lots of time, so if you want to share I am in.”
So Luke began and spilled the whole messy story starting with the day he called a rude doctor in Dallas.
Luke hadn’t felt so good in a long time - this was extremely relieving, spilling his guts all over a man he’d probably never see again and as an icing on the cake the man was smart, nice and not judging at all!
He listened to Luke, his brown eyes warm and empathetic, sometimes he nodded understandingly, sometimes he made an approving sound and once in a while he frowned trying to connect the dots. And sometimes he smiled a beautifully bitter-sweet smile.
“So what’s your advice?”
“I don’t have one, but I could tell you another story.”
“Okay…”
“When I was young I was in love with someone, he was gorgeous and funny, the sarcastic kind of funny, and incredibly smart. But there was something confusing, unsettling about him I wasn’t sure I could handle. The more we get to know each other the more I felt insecure, sometimes he acted just incomprehensible, so I told him that I needed time and space for a while and I walked away back home to my family. He didn’t say much, only: “How convenient for you that you have at least a family to run to…” This made me so angry and I thought, ‘what an ass’.
When I came back he wasn’t there anymore. He let slip an amazing scholarship through his fingers only to never have to see me again.
Finally I realized that he wasn’t an ass - he was simply broken, horribly damaged. And until today I keep asking myself if I could have helped him to heal - if I hadn’t been such a coward.... I still miss him, even after 15 years…so maybe I have an advice at last: Go after him, even if he refuses to have anything to do with you anymore…”
At the next stop Luke left the train determined to get back home without delay.
Standing on the platform looking up to the strangely familiar stranger Luke smiled:
“Thank you very much, ‘John’ - Luke wasn’t sure if the man had told him his real name, and he didn’t care, he hadn’t told him his actual name either. This had been the proverbial meeting of two strangers on a train, confiding most intimate stories just because they knew they’d never see each other again.
“You’re welcome, Edward. This is the right thing to do! Reid is worth it!”
But before Luke could react the doors closed and the train began to move.
“... I haven’t told you his name…” he whispered looking after the departing train.

We fell apart because my dad sent me to school abroad and we lost touch.
And when me meet from time to time there is still a lot sympathy left on both sides.

It is amazing what you can tell a complete stranger with the comfort of knowing you will never see them again.
