Reid's Not Used to Fighting with Her - Warning: angsty nancygrew November 19 2011, 02:10:18 UTC
Reid was sitting at his desk when he heard a disturbance in the outer office. He could hear the soothing tones of his administrative assistant and the yelping of his best . . .of Katie Snyder.

Reid walked out of his office and saw that Lowell had twisted Katie’s arm around her back and was frog-marching her out. Reid was saddened by the fact that he was unmoved by Katie’s tears.

“You did not wish to be disturbed,” Lowell explained to Reid. “But Ms. Snyder was not taking no for an answer. If she does not leave of her own free will, I am going to have to decide between having her arrested for trespassing or using my stun gun on her.”

“Thank you for taking your responsibilities so seriously, Lowell,” said Reid. “But I’m willing to see her.”

Lowell released Katie’s arm and brushed invisible lint off of his own sleeve before sitting at his desk.

Reid led Katie into his office. When she moved to sit down, he said, “Don’t bother sitting. You won’t be here that long.”

Katie sniffled.

“I called the publishers this morning to try to stop the book from being published but they told me it was too late!” cried Katie.

Reid sneered. “You’ve known for weeks that Luke felt betrayed by your writing this book. But you’ve only decided today that Luke’s friendship was more important to you than profiting by selling him out?”

“He’s the hero of the book, Reid!” defended Katie. “Everyone who reads the book will know how amazing Luke is. They’ll see that he’s a generous philanthropist--- ”

“Luke loves you,” spat Reid. “The Snyders consider you family and you betrayed their trust by writing an expose on Luke. How can you justify baring Luke’s personal life to the world?”

“I knew it would be a good story and that he’d be a great role model for kids,” justified Katie. “He’s overcome so--”

Reid sighed sadly. “The fact that you didn’t talk to him about this ‘great opportunity’ to be a role model proves that you knew how much pain it would cause Luke to have strangers read about his personal dramas. And that you didn’t care. How did you imagine that you’d be able to remain the anonymous author of ‘Mr. Snyder: The Scandalous Life of an Heir to the Walsh and Grimaldi Fortunes’? It was one thing to pressure Nancy Hughes to claim to be the author of ‘Oakdale Confidential’ when you wrote that trashy piece of gossip and innuendo but---”

“Luke’s life has been so full of drama and wealth, that it’s a surefire best-seller,” sobbed Katie. “When my old publisher asked me if I was interested in writing another book, I knew that I could give Jacob financial security by writing about Luke.”

“The fact that you’re still trying to justify what you’ve done is appalling,” Reid informed Katie. “I can’t be around you for awhile.”

“I’m your best friend, Reid,” said Katie while wiping her nose with her sleeve. “You can’t just write me out of your life.”

“You hurt Luke,” said Reid. Nothing else needed to be said.

“I swear that I’ll make it up to him,” vowed Katie. When Reid just stared at her impassively, she ran from the room.

Reid rubbed a hand over his face. He’d always known that no good would come from making friends.

Oh Nancy, I love this! Katie has always put herself and her wants first (the list of people she's screwed over is long)....and she'll never stop!

Aw, thanks so much! I worried the ficlet would be kind of hated as it's not happy and it's an ugly bump in the road for the Reid and Katie friendship. I never really saw Katie as the sweetheart of the show because she did have some ethical issues but I did love [most of] the Katie and Reid friendship.

I too liked most of their friendship, but toward the end, she seemed ready to throw Reid under the bus for Chris to get the COS job.

I don't know how Katie can make it up to Luke. She is so selfish and oblivious here. I hope Reid won't forgive her too easily, if at all.

I kind of envision Luke EVENTUALLY making up with Katie [after a LOT of groveling on her part] because he wouldn't want Reid to lose a friendship. But maybe not. It would be interesting to see SOMEONE be held accountable for their actions.

I can see that. Luke is in the habit of forgiving people who have hurt him. Reid is another story, however.

Ooh, this is interesting. I know it's the norm in fics to have Reid and Katie be besties but if it came to Katie or Luke, Reid would choose Luke and here he's rightfully defending him. Really like this!

Thank you. Yeah, I don't see Reid having any difficulty whatsoever when it came down between choosing Luke and anyone else. I think it would be tough for him to truly forgive someone who betrayed Luke's trust.

This is great--so in character and moving because Katie can be very self-absorbed and accustomed to people forgiving her and Reid would not be able to easily forgive anyone for hurting Luke. Sad to see the besties fighting but Luke is Reid's favorite!

Thank you!

I was just so stunned that Henry forgave Katie so relatively easily after she helped Vienna with the fake pregnancy. It could be argued that if Barbara and Henry were together, then Barbara wouldn't have been kidnapped. Or if she was kidnapped, the police would have taken her disappearance seriously from the beginning.

Thus, we have Katie to thank for Krusty the Clown.

“You hurt Luke,” said Reid. Nothing else needed to be said."

AAAWWW - it's amazing, that it only needs a three-word-sentence of you saying soooo much more!

Thanks! It's probably obvious that I like Protective!Reid so one of my favorite scenes on the show was when Reid told off Noah for hurting Luke.

After I started writing it [and realized that a comment fic was going to be too short to have a resolution], I started regretting that I didn't go with my first idea of having the fight between Reid and Noah at some point in the distant future [wedding reception for Reid and Luke's eldest grandchild?] and have Elderly!Noah be all petulant about Elderly!Reid having stolen Elderly!Luke from him.

Thanks for the nice comment!

When it comes to Luke, Reid is has no compassion for anyone that hurts him. Sorry, Katie, you overstepped you boundaries with Reid this time. Great!
