Reid tried to ignore the uneasiness he had been feeling because of the frequency of these late nights that seem to have gotten to be a regular thing with his boyfriend of two years. Suddenly not very hungry, Reid opened a beer, and sat down on the couch, not bothering turning on any other lights. He kept telling himself that Luke was just hanging out at the farm or something because the couple of times that he had tried the office on these late nights, he had not gotten an answer, and he refused to stoop to asking Luke where he had been like he was a jealous teen or something.
Glancing at his watch, Reid realised that he had been home over an hour, and that it was almost midnight. Sighing loudly, he headed to the shower, fighting back tears, and the fear in his heart. He had to ask Luke so that he could at least know where he stood. He silently told himself that if Luke had found someone younger, with more time to give him that he could fully understand it, and let Luke go and be happy. By the time Reid got out of the shower, and was drying off, he was almost in a full blown panic attack, and was shedding tears, still trying to tell himself that everything was alright.
Slipping on scrub bottoms, Reid lay down on the bed, not even turning back the cover. Hearing the key in the front door, he hastily wiped his eyes, and feigned sleep. He heard Luke walk lightly by the bed, and into the bathroom, followed by the sound of the shower. Reid's imagination went into overdrive then, thinking the worst. Luke was washing off the smell of another man. He felt tears slide from the corner of both of his eyes.
Luke came out of the bathroom, and reached over to turn on the lamp. " Don't do that." Reid said shakily.
Hearing the tremor in Reid's voice, Luke turned on the light to see something he had never seen, Reid Oliver crying. " What's wrong baby? What happened? Did you lose a patient?" Luke asked, trying to think what could have caused this show of emotion.
Sitting up on the side of the bed slowly, wiping tears, Reid blurted out the truth." I know you are probably seeing someone, and I can't blame you, my crazy hours and such, but...
" OMG,"exclaimed Luke, " it never crossed my mind you would think that. Reid, look at me."
When Reid angled his face up to look at him, Luke fell to his knees in front of his lover and put his hands on the older man's knees, shedding tears of his own now. " I have never and will never need or want anyone but you. I have been overseeing carpenters work on the house that I bought for us, trying to have it ready by January so that we could move in on the day we met and..........Reid, I want to marry you before we move in. I was going to ask Christmas. I'm sorry."
Reid slid from the bed to his knees, relief and joy flowing through him, and tears flowing freely now, grabbing Luke and ravishing him like there was no tomorrow.
" So I take that as a yes?" Luke asked hopefully. Reid leaned back and smiled at his lover and future husband, " I thought I was losing you, but I get to be with you forever. A thousand times yes."
