Hawaii!?

So I've been so-so satisfied at work lately.. I do like what I'm doing, but I also often get the feeling that while I could fix a lot of the things I see as being wrong, I don't see myself being given the power to do so. I feel good about the low level management of my company, but I have no faith in the upper levels. This combined with the fact that they seem to be growing my group in Finland but not here in the US has lead me through wild swings of liking my job and not liking it. Probably coincides with my internal struggles as to whether I want to try to get into the management track or not. Anyway, this is all peripheral to my main point. Basically, I'm not shopping for jobs, but I happened to click on one of the "boutique" job boards that seem to be all the rage these days.

And I put a resume together, and sent it in on Monday.

Here was the hook: Must be able to work at a 14,000 foot altitude. Must pass high altitude physical, possess a valid driver's license, have a clean driving record, and be able to drive a 4WD vehicle. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid passport and be willing to travel internationally, as required.

I'm basically a perfect fit for the technical requirements of the position, which would be doing embedded control software for instrumentation on one of the big telescopes in Hawaii, with occasional travel to its twin in Chile. I'd spend some (most?) days in an office, and some days on the summit. I think it'd be nice to get out of the cube farm and back into a lab/industrial setting again. It's one of the things I miss from my days at EB. Not too many software engineers can say they commuted to work on top of a volcano in a 4x4, so it might make for a good life story.

The job is in Hawaii, and I can't decide where that falls on the good thing-bad thing scale. I think it'd be an awesome experience, but I do have concerns about being so far from friends and family. On the other hand, it'd be fun to have people come visit us, so if you've ever wanted to go to Hawaii but have been put off by the cost of hotels, maybe you should be crossing your fingers for us.

The funny thing was that I clicked on the ad in part to get away from the cold and the snow, and then realized that it's probably pretty cold and snowy at 14k feet. I should just accept that Mother Nature has it in for me.

Who knows if they'll even call me back, we shall see...
