First off, there was something I meant to put in yesterday's post that I was unable to get around to because I got called away from my computer before I was planning to post. So, to begin I'm posting a vid my hetero-life partner
jack_is_love17 made me as a gift. She knew I was getting annoyed with the over-abundance of Peter/Olivia angst (and always about the same plot line too) that was becoming prominent in fic and vid media. And for me, that's not a good thing because I quickly go from annoyed to bored and then I end up leaving the fandom for months at a time until something happens to make me check the show out again. So, to keep the love alive, she made me a happy!Peter/Olivia vid, full of their adorable moments -- not a glimpse of angst in sight. *happy sigh* Thank you so much, my love! You helped keep me in love with one of my favourite series during an interminably long hiatus and in such a state that I'll actually look forward to the serious amounts of fandom wank/drama that shall ensue upon its return. So, here it is! A Peter/ Liv vid done to the Glee Cast version of Lucky, originally done by Jason Mraz and Colbie Collait. Please leave her a comment and let her know what you think!

In other news, I finished watching Doctor Who series 1 (well, series 1 of New Who anyway). And, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit this, but I just now noticed something I had never noted before (or, if I did, I quickly forgot about it). When the Doctor is stuck in the Big Brother House in "Bad Wolf," the eye symbol that keeps popping up on the telly and on the rest of the Game Station during commercials or during solar flare activity is in the shape of the eye, complete with Vortex Glow like a galaxy, that Rose Tyler gets in "Parting of the Ways." It also vaguely resembles the same glow that Donna's got in "Journey's End" when she participated in the Meta-Crisis. And strangely, it could be a call back to either one since Rose imprinted herself throughout all of time and space and Donna's destiny ended up having a throwback (like how she could hear TenII's heartbeat before his creation). I'm pretty sure, this early on, that it's supposed to Rose's eye and not Donna's, but still. It's interesting to note.
It's also intriguing to note how lighthearted Jack Harkness was when he traveled with Rose and Nine. I mean, the jadedness between the end of "Parting of the Ways" and the first Torchwood episode "Everything Changes" is very evident the first time you watch the series, but it's evidently been too long since I've watched both programmes and really paid attention to the character changes, outside of the obvious issue of Jack being immortal by Torchwood's period. But I realised something. As much as I love Jack in Torchwood, I *miss* the easygoing, slightly naive, hero style he had going for him. Now he's got a weight-of-the-world, anti-hero, Doctor complex. And I like that cos I love Jack Harkness implicitly, almost as much as I love the Doctor (though it's impossible to be quite the same quantity), but I do miss the "happy" Jack. Y'know, the one whose stories always seemed to end with him being naked and running from sexy aliens. Tomorrow, I plan to watch series 2. I would start now, but for some reason Nine's regeneration affects me quite strongly. (Probably cos he was my first Doctor, so I'm VERY attached to him). I can watch Ten regenerate into Eleven and then go straight to watching Eleventh Hour (Eleven's first ep), but Nine regenerating always seems to send me into a period of mourning. Which is odd because I love and worship Ten a lot more than Eleven, and yet I find myself more hesitant to start on his episodes.
Oh, Whoniverse...
Meme 1: 30 Day Meme -- Day 27, Your Favourite Place in Great Detail
Well, if we were talking about my favourite country, it would be England. But something tells me, when they say place, they mean a much smaller playing field. A specific area that can be zoned in to one specific zip code.
So, with that parameter in mind -- a singular place with a specific scenery -- I would have to say that, for me, it's a place that technically no longer exists. It was my favourite place to go to think, or when I was upset, or just needed some quiet, or when someone wanted to have a private chat with me. It was the swing on the porch of my old house, which was taken down after I moved away six and a half years ago. It was quite old -- so old in fact that the wood that held the bench swing up was starting to sag under the weight of the chains. My friends were always nervous about sitting on it with me because they were afraid their added weight might force the whole thing to the concrete floor of the porch. But, I trusted the old thing for we had sat on it since before I could remember.
I would sit on it for hours, sometimes chatting gleefully, and sometimes in absolute silence. I used to watch the thunderstorms as they would pass over our house, protected by a porch screen from the rain and the wooden roof above my head. When the power was out and the Sun would start to go down, I would use it as a place to have light to read books or to work on writing my stories (back when I did most of my writing by hand with pen and a notebook). And it's where my friends would come to me with their problems, and we would sit there silently together afterward, listening to the swing creak as we slowly went back and forth and watching the occasional car pass by on the road to our right, while I would slowly turn the problem around in my mind, searching for the right advice or condolence to help lighten the burden.
I still go to this place in my head when I need an inward sense of calm, and it shows up in my dreams when I've been feeling particularly homesick. *sigh* Just thinking about it makes me all relaxed.

Meme 2: Men of Awesome
Number 4:
Zack Morris from Good Morning, Miss Bliss; Saved by the Bell; Saved by the Bell: The College Years and two films -- Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style and Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas
Leslie Burke: Guess what? Mrs. Teesdale won the lottery and she quit Cal U and is flying to Bora Bora with the soccer coach.
Zack Morris: Does anybody know who her replacement is?
Leslie Burke: Professor Hemmings.
Zack Morris: [groans] Oh, no! The guy eats freshmen for lunch. They call him Hannibal Lecturer.
Leslie Burke: He is a well renowned scholar and author. The Supreme Court consults him. He's a genius.
A.C. Slater: Yeah, but he's hard.
Zack Morris: He's brutal.
Alex Tabor: He's impossible.
Dr. Arthur Hemmings: [enters] He's here!
[the room lights flicker as thunder and lighting rumbles from a storm outside]
Zack Morris: [to the camera] Wow. I hope this doesn't happen every time he walks into the room.
--Saved by the Bell: The College Years (1x13 "A Question of Ethics")
Zachary 'Zack' Morris: Hey, Mr. Belding. What brings you to study hall?
Mr. Richard Belding: Don't get cocky, Morris. I've got my eye on you.
Zachary 'Zack' Morris: Sorry, sir. You're not my type.
--Saved by the Bell (3x23 "Cut Day")
From 1987 to 1993, this character was one of the most well known among pre-teens and teenagers. Sadly, I was not old enough in the different programmes' original era to be able to bask in the Team Zack vs Team Slater debates. (I would have been totally Team Zack though, obviously). I did, however, become quite familiar with the whole franchise when it was in syndication.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet my first television series crush. And one I still come back to on a regular basis now that the latter two series and the two films are out on DVD (Good Morning, Miss Bliss will probably never be released on DVD sadly, as Disney owns the show). This character is also the reason I am so obsessed/in love with con men. Cos he was the first one I discovered and it was one of my favourite parts of his personality.
I first discovered this character/these shows when I was nine. All three programmes were on syndication on both TBS and WGN and would come on for two hours straight between the two stations Monday through Friday. And I never missed a showing. Using that method alone for four years, I think I saw every episode at least six or seven times. And the main reason I kept tuning in, even after knowing what happened after seeing the story line all the way through multiple times? Zack freakin' Morris. (And also, I was a bit in love with the Zack/Kelly pairing, or as into a pairing as you can be for what was originally a Saturday Morning sitcom).
Reasons to love Zack:
1) He's a con artist. Which means there's a certain amount of charm and charisma to him. He can talk all of his friends into trying pretty much anything (mainly so he can blackmail them for it later), and Mr Belding (the principal of Bayside High) falls prey to his pranks every time, even when he sees them coming. The fact that's a con man also means he views the world in a very interesting light -- his approaches to problem solving are always very shady, but they do have genius. His way of getting out of exams took effort (and he usually always ended up getting caught due to some oversight), but they were quite brilliant. He also could figure out what buttons to push on almost everyone.
2) He's cunning, but he's no genius. Zack had what I shall term "street smarts." He could con almost anyone, and would to any lengths to impress a girl -- including learning to recite Shakespeare -- but he's a complete loss at most academic pursuits. However, this isn't because he lacks the brain cells. He just genuinely DOESN'T.CARE. He scored over a 1500 on the SAT (back in the days when the highest you could get was 1600) -- higher than his bookworm best friends Screech and Jessie achieved -- and got accepted into Yale (which he only applied to because his mother made him). But, he is a guy who would much rather go to the beach, con his friends and teachers, and try to make money/get good grades without doing any work. And he was very open about that, with everyone. And while I usually like bookwormy guys and not lazy bones (cos I'm lazy enough on my own, thanks), I found this something of an admirable trait in him. I kind of like the fact that he fails every exam he takes and yet manages to get over a 1500 on the SAT while not even paying attention to his test (he was checking out the pretty girl in front of him for most of it).
3) He's willing to do con artist tricks to help out his friends. He is, for the most part, completely self serving, but when a friend is in need, he is just as quick to use his cunning to assist. (See 1x02 "The Lisa Card" for more explanation).
4) He's a smart ass. This speaks for itself. All of you who know me even a little bit over this website can probably guess why I love this trait so much in my men. Snark rules in my family, as do sarcastic retorts. Naturally, the men I love tend to have this same tendency.
5) He's a good person. Sure, he may like to try to weasel people out of their money. He occasionally objectifies women with Slater (for which their friend Jessie always called them both "pigs"). He can, let's face it, be an all out jerk. But he also deeply loves his friends and his family and Mr Belding. He may tease them and accidentally hurt them with his cons, but he's the first to defend them too. When Jessie gets addicted to caffeine pills, it's Zack that manages to grab them away from her and helps her break her addiction and it's he that holds her while she cries from sheer terror at what she's turning into. And it's Zack that Lisa turns to when she needs encouragement for applying to a fashion school she's dreamt of going to since she was a child. And it's Zack that comforts Kelly when her boyfriend cheats on her (and it's also Zack who confronts the cheating boyfriend) -- and this was after Kelly had cheated on Zack with that same boy. And well, if I got into the Zack, Screech, and Slater bromance moments of awesome, I'd be here all night.
6) He breaks the fourth wall. It's not just anyone who can get away with doing that. ;)
Zack isn't the most white hatted character of late 80s/early 90s teen telly, but he's definitely one of the most interesting and most lovable. Hell, I've watched this show for 14 years and I still have a crush on him!
