So, one of my best friends--
quirkyoppossum --made me a belated birthday gift. (Mainly cos she works at a summer camp and was away during my birthday). She tends to make me vids for special occasions-- A Devil's Whore vid set to Billy Joel's Two Thousand Years just for kicks; a Peter/Olivia vid done to Coldplay's Fix You for my graduation. And now for my birthday, she made me a vid for a fandom that not many people really think about anymore--Joan of Arcadia.
Joan of Arcadia was a series that lasted for two years -- fall 2003 to spring 2005--and followed the sophomore and junior years of Joan Girardi, who starts getting visits from God. Throughout these two years, she falls in love, has her heart broken, gets put in "crazy camp," and watches her best friend die right in front of her. And through all of this, God gives her little missions to do that sometimes seem superfluous and pointless to Joan, but help to show that she has an effect on the world around her. It was a beautiful programme (and too short-lived in my opinion), and although I love the relationship not only between Joan and her friends Adam, Grace, and Judith, and also with her family, the most intriguing relationship is that with Joan and God. When Joan feels that she most needs God, He is (predictably) nowhere around, and when she would rather He get lost, He likes to rain on her parade. But just when she's about to give up hope, He is inevitably there to pick her back up again and set her on track, even when she thinks she's probably insane.
I never thought to look for JoA fanvids (I must confess) because by the time fanvids became popular on youtube, JoA had long since ended. But, just like Joan, I--along with
quirkyoppossum and
ramblingmonk -- lost someone I considered to be a best friend, despite not having known her as long as some other friends. She was a kindred spirit and seemed to innately "get" me. Not long after she passed away, the song used in the vid--which some would say is vidded to death--became popular on the radio, and I automatically thought of this fandom. It seemed to capture Joan and God's relationship perfectly, as well as my relationship with God as well. Strangely, despite the fact that there were JoA vids with this title on youtube, none were actually to this song. So, I went to my best friend and requested it specifically. As usual, she delivered even more than I would have dreamed.
So, check it out, whether you've seen an episode of Joan of Arcadia or not. It's beautiful and heartfelt and something anyone can relate to. And please, let her know what you think. JoA was never a huge fandom, even when it was on telly, so expected feedback is small. I would appreciate any support my f-list can give her. Cos she never believes me when I tell her how awesome a job she's done.
