Amy reported to the office early, anticipating that she would need to be there before Jay so she could prepare necessary files. She half expected to see Jay there as well, the redhead more than a little surprised to see the blond haired business executive asleep on the leather couch in his office. After taking a moment to look, she realized that he was asleep in the business suit that he had worn last night, his suit jacket being used as a makeshift blanket. Perhaps it was the early hour of the day, but at that moment, Jay looked far less intimidating than usual.

So, instead of waking him Amy went to her own office to prepare the financial briefs and make dinner reservations for next week, the redhead also deciding to stop at the local café to get coffee and donuts.

By the time she returned, Jay was just starting to stir, the redhead setting a coffee and a donut on his desk. Just because she was being nice enough to get breakfast for him didn’t mean that she was obligated to stay. Plus, being at the office gave her a much needed opportunity to research a little further into Fortune’s financial history and other business dealings.

Unfortunately, she didn’t get very far, Jay soon beckoning her into his office.

“Good Morning, Ms. Dumas.”

“Good Morning, Mr. Cage,” she clasped her hands behind her back, “I trust that you slept well?”

Jay managed a wry smile, “there was a bit of a crisis with one of the distributors and I was needed immediately.” He nodded towards the cardboard coffee cup on his desk, “thank you for that.” A beat passed, “you look like you didn’t sleep at all?”

Amy smiled pleasantly enough, “it’s not a problem, Mr. Cage. I also have the financial briefs prepared and the reservations have been made.”

“Good,” Jay leaned back in his chair a little, “would you mind closing the door, Ms. Dumas? There are just a few things I want to discuss with you in advance of the meetings today.”

Amy nodded, hesitating only briefly before she closed the door, setting her coffee down on the coffee table. “Is this highly classified, Mr. Reso?”

Jay shrugged slightly, “in a sense, yes. The manufactures that we’re meeting with are globally based and looking to establish themselves in the States. Fortune Inc. is in ownership of a few factories that would fit what they need.” He paused, taking a sip of his coffee, “the first meeting will be with Dean Malenko out of Africa, the lunch meeting with Ted DiBiase out of Europe and the final meeting of the day will be with Dave Batista and Randy Orton, representing the Asian and Australian markets. All of these men are also business partners with Mr. Del Rio.”

Amy arched an eyebrow at that, wanting to ask about the deeper connection but knowing that she couldn’t without raising too much suspicion.

“As you’re aware, Ms. Dumas, Fortune make more money with side business. And what we’re currently in the middle of is no exception. However, what’s coming ahead, this is a risky endeavor.”

“Is this your way of giving me an out?”

Jay nodded briskly, “if you want to walk away from Fortune Inc. then now is your chance. You’ll be compensated with the rest of your salary from the year and you can keep everything that’s been bought for you.” Making an open gesture with his arms, he continued, “However, if you choose to stay, I need your complete cooperation and trust that you’ll stay until the end.. Not just out of loyalty to the service, but as my partner.. Like we used to be.”

Amy smoothed the front of her Versace skirt, “I was hired to be your personal assistant and I intend to keep it that way.”

An approving smile briefly curved at the corners of his mouth. “Good. Now I can tell you more about the true nature of Fortune Inc. True, they do have legitimate business but the majority of my money is made because Fortune Inc. deals as an international liaison for numerous underground operations. Mr. Del Rio, while wealthy in his own right, needs the connections and financial backing from our company in order to make a move against the cartels in Central and South America.”

“As in the mafia?”

“In a sense, yes,” Jay replied. “There will be a great deal of working with numerous criminal organizations on a global scale. That’s why we’re meeting today with Malenko, Batista, and DiBiase.”

Amy nodded slowly, taking the time to process everything that she had just been told. “So, if Mr. Del Rio is the Central and South America contact…”

Jay smirked, full of confidence, “North America will be under my jurisdiction. All business will be conducted through me.” And then he gestured to her, “with your assistance, of course.”

Amy inclined her head lightly, “and just how do I fit into all of this?”

“I’ll need you for negotiations, meetings, business deals, oversee finances… that sort of thing.” He eyed her with a touch of criticism and something else, “I may be enough to usually persuade but a good looking woman?”

“Pretty much what I’m already doing?” And at Jay’s affirming nod, Amy fell silent. From his verbal admission, the two agents had enough information to build a strong case against Fortune Inc, but not enough physical evidence yet. But, she was already into this deal. “What else do I need to know?”

While Jay continued to fill her in on the details of what was forthcoming, Amy listened intently. She was reminded, almost painfully, of their time together at the academy for their field agent training and then for their specialist training..

“So, why are you here so early?”

“Is that really any of your business?”

Jay smirked at her, “as your boss? Yes, it is.. And as your partner in the field? Yes, it is.”

Amy rolled her eyes and then tucked errant trends of hair behind her ear, “if you must know, Alex and I broke up..” She cleared her throat and then looked away from him, “Deputy Assistant Director McMahon reassigned him.”

Jay almost laughed, “I can’t really say that I’m surprised about that.. Especially because you’re involved.”

Amy scoffed at the implication, “I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Jay arched an eyebrow at her, “oh really? So you think it was just some sort of coincidence that I got reassigned on a highly classified mission with Hunter after we all completed speciality training?”

“Are you still trying to convince me that Shane had something to do with it?”

“Are you still trying to believe that Shane didn’t have anything to do with it?” Jay stood and put his palms flat on the desk, “Ames, he wanted you from the moment we started at the academy!”

Amy stood as well, her hands placed near his, “would you keep it down?

Jay smirked at her and leaned closer, “we’re the only ones in the building, Amy. What are you so worried about?”

Amy shot him a look, “oh I don’t know Jay, maybe the fact that these rooms could be wired?”

Jay hooked a finger beneath her chin, “trust me Ames, this room isn’t wired. There aren’t any cameras, either.”

Amy couldn’t help but shudder at his touch, the redhead swallowing hard. “I just broke up with Alex.”

“I know,” Jay replied, the blond man still close enough for her to feel the warmth of his face. “This isn’t over, Amy.. not by a long shot.”

With that, he was pulling back and Amy sat down in her chair.. Jay doing the same at his desk. The hard work hadn’t even begun but Amy could already feel the inner war raging.
