Hunter eyed his coworkers as they returned to the table but didn’t bother to ask questions. As special agents they had dealt with cases of all kinds. And then further in specializations, they had trained for every type of situation imaginable. Amy and Jay had specialized in hostage rescue while Hunter trained in SWAT. Granted, the academy had never included training to cover a mission to this exact magnitude, but this is what they had gone to the academy for. Renee, Alex, Josh, and A.J had all gone through at the same time but then had gone to different field offices while Amy, Jay, and Hunter were going through specialization for an additional two years.

“Is everything all right?” Hunter questioned as Jay and Amy returned. “Do either of you need to go?”

“Everything is fine,” Amy replied, offering a somewhat shaky smile.

Jay reached out to tuck errant copper colored strands behind Amy’s left ear and acting as if nothing had happened, “Mr. Del Rio will be returning to this area on Friday evening and staying until next Monday. Your presence has been requested specifically by Mr. Del Rio.” Smirking he added, “I hope you can gamble, Ms. Dumas.”

Amy arched an eyebrow, “And just why is that, Mr. Cage?”

“Mr. Del Rio will be staying at Trump Tower but he has requested a visit to Caesar’s Palace,” Jay shrugged a little; “as a special client of Fortune, I’m obliged to fulfill Del Rio’s wishes, to a reasonable degree.”

“Ms. Young and I will be attending to a top client during that same weekend,” Hunter revealed to the two women. “A full itinerary or we would be joining you, of course.”

“Of course,” Amy repeated, the redhead already dreading revealing this new bit of information to Alex. “I’ll make reservations for Mr. Del Rio’s favored restaurants tomorrow.”

Jay raised his wine glass, an approving smile on his face, disappearing after he’d taken a sip, “tomorrow we will more than likely have a few business meetings in New Jersey, possibly to obtain a few production companies.”

Amy inclined her head slightly, “will I need to prepare a portfolio review for Fortune Inc. in advance of the meetings?”

Jay shook his head, “that shouldn’t be necessary but maybe a financial brief?”

Hunter coughed before Amy could say a word, “I can’t believe that the two of you are trying to conduct business at a time like this.” Making a sweeping gesture with his right arm, the blond male added, “We’re at the top of the world with a breathtaking view of the City.” And then he gestured for their waiter, “the dessert menu, please.”

Hunter’s suggestion was not lost on any member of the small dinner party, Amy in no real rush to end the evening just yet. She knew that confrontation of some sort was inevitable when she returned to her apartment. Still, Amy tried to prepare herself as best she could.

When she and Renee return to the apartment at close to midnight, Amy expects a conflict of some sort and Alex doesn’t disappoint.

“… Josh and I are going to head back to their apartment,” Renee informs the combustible pair. “We’ll see you at the office.”

Their departure, while noted, wasn’t completely acknowledged; Amy and Alex standing in the kitchen, separated only by the island.

“Whatever it is that you need to say, get it out now,” Amy began, her voice deathly calm. “And I don’t care how long this takes us, but we’re going to resolve this, tonight.”

“I really don’t have too much to say,” Alex replied in a somewhat subdued tone. “I get that we’re not the type for a conventional relationship. Obviously, until we relocated to New York, I enjoyed what we had because it worked for us.” Conflicted russet orbs met guarded hazel, “maybe we were just fooling ourselves, Ames.”

“Maybe,” Amy agreed, the redhead pinching the bridge of her nose. “I think our timing sucks.” She managed a smile, resting her elbows on the tile counter. “And this is stressful. Not us, but this assignment. It’s stressful and time consuming and it’s only going to get worse.”

After a long moment of contemplative silence, Alex reached across the counter, thumb caressing the wrist that wasn’t sporting the diamond tennis bracelet. “Why don’t we see what happens after we get back to D.C?”

Amy held his gaze, “for sake of being honest? I don’t think that’s going to make a difference.”

Alex frowned, “but why? So we didn’t work, right now but that doesn’t mean--”

“It’s complicated,” Amy replied quickly. “And I.. look, there’s a lot of tough shit that’s coming in the near future. I need to be on-call almost 24/7 to work with Mr. Cage and--”

“Mr. Cage..” Alex echoed dryly. “So you’re going to ditch me for some corporate jackass in a suit?”

Amy bit down on her lower lip, “it’s a lot more complicated than that, Alex. And I can’t tell you too much without jeopardizing this mission.”

Alex rubbed his temples, “that’s bullshit, Amy..” He rested his forearms on the counter, “did you know that Deputy Assistant Director McMahon reassigned me to another mission?”

Amy shook her head, “when--”

Alex smiled wryly, “you’ve been spending so much time with Mr. Cage lately that you’re never home.”

Amy folded her arms beneath her breasts, “you knew that, going into this, Renee and I were lead agents. That means having to be on-call and that means--”

“What’s with you and Mr. Cage?”

“What are you talking about?”

Alex lipped his lips, “how do you know him?”

Amy shook her head, “I already told you that I’m not talking to you about this.”

Alex smiled wryly, “the least you could do is explain why when you’re breaking up with me, Red.”

Amy smiled almost sadly, “let’s just say, he’s someone I used to know.”

“I had kinda figured,” Alex admitted and then rubbed the back of his head, “I guess I never really would stand a chance against that, would I?” And when Amy arched an eyebrow in question, he continued, “you don’t see it but your face kinda lights up when you talk about this Cage guy.”

“I’m sorry..” Amy said finally.

Alex nodded his agreement, “me too, Ames.. me too. I’ll see myself out.”

While Alex left, Amy went into her bedroom.. The redhead stripping out of the dress she had been wearing and laying back on her bed.
