Christmas in July is not Josh Harter’s idea of fun. But his girlfriend Jamie is enthusiastic about the idea and because of that; he’ll go out of his way to make it happen for her and to see her smile.
Even if that means driving to the Christmas Tree Shop so he can get decorations and buy Christmas CDs that he’s only going to listen to once.
Plus, because of the crappy weather, they hadn’t been able to spend Christmas together last year so he was going to do what he needed to do to make it up to her.
Jamie had firmly insisted that he didn’t need to but he had overheard her talking to Traci about it and that had made the decision for him. Josh had made the reservations for the cabin that very night in fact, two weeks ago to the day.
He’d caught some shit from Patrick but, the ever quick retort of ‘at least I’m getting some’ had quickly silenced his smart-ass best friend.
Josh had also spoken to Lauren to see if there were any special Christmas traditions that Jamie kept and had subsequently sworn the blonde woman to absolute secrecy so she wouldn’t spoil the surprise.
He had gone ahead, the day before they were supposed to go up together, decorating the cabin with the lights and garlands, setting up a small fake, pre-decorated tree in the corner. And even if he still thought the idea was a bit on the ridiculous side, he put up mistletoe because it was what people did at Christmas.
After some cajoling, he managed to convince Jamie to wear a blindfold for the drive over, their bags in the trunk and the pretty blonde woman completely convinced that they were just spending a weekend away.
Josh had almost thought about making cookies or something similar for her but his cooking skills were still lacking. And he didn’t want to take a risk by giving her food poisoning so he brought her favorite foods with him on the same day that he went to set up the house.
Her final surprise was waiting in the lone box beneath the tree, an impulsive buy, maybe. But Josh knew that it would be the perfect gift to give to Jamie.
“Are we there yet?”
“Almost,” he reassured her, one hand on the steering wheel while the other held her hand. “You okay?”
“Just really curious,” she admitted. “I haven’t been able to see anything since we left Detroit.”
“That is kinda the point, J.”
She frowned, and he resisted the urge to kiss her, waiting until the car was parked in front of the cabin before he finally did so. First kissing her cheek, then her jaw, then her nose and finally the corner of her mouth; Jamie whimpering a little in frustration before he kissed her fully on the lips.
“We’re here,” he finally said, opening the door and exiting the car quickly, heading over to the passenger’s side so he could help her. “No steps to worry about so just trust me.”
“Of course I’d trust you,” she insisted. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten into the car in the first place.”
He loops one of her arms through his, guiding her from the car to the cabin, taking out the key from his pocket and opening the door, leading her to the middle of the room. “I’m just going to get the bags, okay?” He whispers into her ear, “I’ll be right back.”
Josh moves quickly, not wanting to leave her alone for too long, thankful that she’s only got the one suitcase when he grabs their bags from the trunk.
She’s fidgeting slightly but hasn’t moved and hasn’t lifted off the blindfold, Josh setting the bags near the door, shutting and locking the door before turning on the Christmas lights; bathing the room in their artificial lighting.
Finally he moves behind her, arms coming to embrace her from behind, “okay, you can take the blindfold off now.”
Nimble fingers make short work of the blindfold, Jamie blinking to adjust to the light and then gasping when she realizes what he’s done.
“You did this for me?” She whispered, turning in his embrace to face him.
“Definitely didn’t do it for Patrick,” he replied, grinning a little. “You like it?”
Her reply was to kiss him fully, tilting her head slightly to deepen the kiss, her forehead etching with confusion when he pulled back. “What’s wrong?”
“As much as I want to do that right now, you should open your gift.” He takes her hand in his, leading her towards the small tree with the box underneath. “Sorry it’s not wrapped better.”
Jamie moves to sit on the rug, urging Josh to sit with her, the blonde woman soon arranging herself comfortably on his lap while she reaches for the box. “This isn’t one of those boxes in another box, is it?”
Josh shakes his head, palms resting flat on the rug when she brings the box into her lap.
Eagerly, eyes shining with anticipation, Jamie opens the box, her heart melting almost instantly when she spots the tiny ball of fur, mewing quietly at her. Carefully, she scooped the kitten from the box, cradling the tiny animal to her chest.
“Technically she’s mine but, I thought she could be ours?”
Eyes watery, Jamie nods, nuzzling her cheek in the kitten’s soft fur. “She’s perfect.”
He rests his chin on her shoulder, listening carefully and he can hear the kitten purring contently. “I know I’d be purring like that if I was in that kitten’s place.”
“Later,” Jamie says, her voice full of promise.
“I’m holding you to that,” he half jokes, kissing the side of her neck. “I have a litter box, litter, dry food and a water dish in my bag.”
Jamie is reluctant to put the kitten down because there are a myriad of places that the walking ball of fur could get lost. Josh eases her worries somewhat by also bringing out a cat carrier, the blond man soon thanked with enthusiastic and addicting kisses in thanks.
Between kisses and against his lips, he hears an ‘I love you’ … Josh far more interested in showing her rather than simply saying it.
Maybe this Christmas in July wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
