On Friday evening, Amy and Jamie take a risk by letting A.J and Josh handle the cooking duties but that’s only after they’ve volunteered to do so. Due to an incident, several years ago that resulted in singed eyebrows and new pots and pans for Amy’s kitchen; Jay had been banned from the kitchen without adequate supervision. Currently he was assisting A.J and Josh, though it seemed as if he was doing more harm than good.

It also marks the first time that Karen is seeing A.J and Amy’s apartment; A.J watching nervously to see if Karen and Amy are getting along.

The three women are currently on the patio, chatting about work.

Karen smiled, addressing Amy, “your parents have been a great help to me. I moved from Pittsburgh, so I’m not familiar with the area at all.”

Amy took a sip from her wine, “that sounds like them… and were you an appraiser there, as well?”

“Yes, but for a smaller auction house and not with the same variety,” Karen replied, “the first week was difficult, getting used to working with all forms of art, antiques and furnishings.”

“And why did you move?” Jamie questioned, tracing the foot of her white wine glass with her index finger. “Not that you have to tell me, of course, just curious,” she added with a smile.

Karen half shrugged, “well, mostly for a change of scenery…” She trailed off, smoothing a few strands of hair behind her left ear, “before I moved here, I had never really left Pennsylvania.”

Subconsciously, Jamie glanced back to the apartment behind them, “that seems to be a popular answer… the change of scenery, I mean. Not that we’d really have much to compare it to. Aside from vacations, we haven’t really been out of the Boston area.”

Amy nodded, setting her wine glass on the patio table. “Speaking of vacations, it’s almost time for the annual trip to Cape Cod.” A.J had already brought up the issue with Karen last night, her step-brother having informed her after he had gotten home. As such, the redhead sent a look to Jamie, “as usual, you are invited to come with, as is Josh.”

Jamie hesitated, “my only worry is having to close the practice.”

Amy smiled, “they’re only planning for a Thursday through Sunday trip because mom doesn’t want to close down the auction house for longer than five days.” Continuing she shrugged, “but if you don’t want to go, you don’t have to.”

The blonde woman grinned, “I’ll bring it up with Josh tonight.” A beat passed, “and maybe Jay, as well?”

Karen sent a curious look to Amy, “I wasn’t aware that you and Jay are dating?”

“That’s because we’re not,” Amy replied simply. “We did, in the past, but that’s the past.”

As if he knew, Jay appeared at the sliding glass doors to inform the three that dinner was ready, the blonde male grabbing Amy’s empty wine glass from the table. “Refill?”

“Please.”

He flashed a charming smile that only made her more suspicious, Amy brushing off the notion as she seated herself at the table; the two step-siblings at opposite ends of the table.

Jamie smiled appreciatively, eyeing the dishes that were set out, “everything looks delicious.”

Josh smiled in return, the blond male replying, “When you live alone for a little while, you either learn to cook or starve. Trust me; you didn’t want to know me before.”

“I’m guessing that my brother held the cookbook?”

Jay rolled his eyes, setting Amy’s glass next to her plate before he sat down. “It wasn’t that much of a disaster, J.”

“Yes, it was.”

“Anyway,” A.J interrupted, “why don’t we start? Won’t do us any good if we’re just going to look at the food and not eat it.”

With that, they started, plates passed around family style as if they had all known each other for years and were gathering for a family dinner. And in some ways that wasn’t far from the truth.
