Three days following her grandmother’s funeral and Amy was getting ready to head downtown for a meeting with the family lawyer, Shawn Michaels. Today would be the reading of the will and, in addition to her presence being mandatory; this was an event that Amy wouldn’t miss for the world. She and her aunt Tara couldn’t wait to see the reactions from the rest of their family.
Little did Amy know that she would be in for a surprise from her late grandmother.
“I’ll begin with the division of property, starting with the vacation home in Monaco and the loft in Paris… Mrs. Varon requested that both properties be left in the care of her eldest daughter, Tara. The family manor in Scarsdale has also been left to Tara Varon and the mansion in Manhattan left to Mrs. Varon’s granddaughter Amy Dumas. A second building in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan has also been left to Mrs. Varon’s granddaughter, Amy.”
“Excuse me?” One of Amy’s aunts interrupted, “she left property to that… child, who couldn’t possibly understand the magnitude and…”
“That child,” Tara interrupted, arching an eyebrow at her sister, “is smarter than you’ll ever be. And unlike you? She was there for mom.”
Shawn cleared his throat to direct attention back to him, “family antiques and furnishings in the Scarsdale manor are to be left as is, along with the mansion in Manhattan. Bank accounts are also left to Ms. Tara Varon and Ms. Amy Dumas.”
“This is absurd!”
“One fifth of the family fortune has been bequeathed to the Humane Society of America, one fifth to New York University… and Mrs. Varon has bequeathed $2,000 each to the remaining family members.”
“That’s it?”
Shawn pushed his chair back from the table, reaching out to shake Tara’s hand first. “Ms. Varon,” and then he turned to Amy, “Ms. Dumas. My condolences on your loss.”
The blonde man exited the room calmly, Tara and Amy following and leaving the rest of the family squabbling in their departure.
Shawn was waiting for Amy and Tara, handing a thick manila envelope to the younger woman. “The deed, keys and a letter from your grandmother, in regards to the Tribeca property.”
“Thank you,” Amy replied, “Grandma never mentioned anything about this.”
Tara hugged her niece affectionately, “I’ll talk to you about this over lunch,” they waited for the family car to pull up to the curb. “Mom wanted this to be a surprise.”
“Clearly,” Amy said as she got in the car, “I thought she always meant for me to convert part of the mansion for the business.”
“You know how she was,” Tara remarked, “always full of surprises.”
Amy nodded, the two falling silent on the short ride to their favorite café.
“The building is actually, half a city block that includes an old church,” Tara began once they were seated. “And also includes another smaller property that used to be an art gallery, an old restaurant and a courtyard between the two main buildings.” She grinned, “I think what mom was intending, was for you to use the mansion for something else. Maybe even sell it. Whatever you want, you know?”
Amy eyed her aunt suspiciously, “were you in on this plan?”
Tara held up her hands in mock defense, “I plead the fifth.”
“Whatever, Aunt Tara…” She smirked, taking a sip of her iced water. “I still can’t believe Grandma left me a church.”
“You know how she was… as eccentric as we are.”
Amy nodded shortly, deciding that she would look over the official documents after they’d eaten lunch.
