Title: Let's Hope Not
Rating: FRT
Spoilers: general for the show
Summary: A partnership is like a marriage.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything but the words. And not even all of those.
This story was inspired by Nix's line in Or So They Say that a partnership is like a marriage. Thanks to her for letting me go ahead with this.
Let's Hope Not
Tony's clipping his nails in the office again. Not just his nails. His toenails. He’s barefoot. McGee knows that Tony knows that it is bound to get Kate going. He’s right. She takes one look and starts sniping. If it hadn’t been the toenails, it would have been something else.
Like invasion of privacy. McGee has a sneaking suspicion who stole his red pen. Actually, it's glaringly obvious. Kate doesn’t invade privacy. She’s more physical. Kick in the balls, elbow to the ribs. That’s Kate. More overt and less underhanded than Tony.
Abby’s arrival makes for a very temporary truce between them. She’s got evidence for the team. It’s amazing how, while talking to everyone, she manages to make him feel like lab tech that broke a test tube. He’s done . . . something. Not sure what, but she’s got that “you are scum” look down pat.
He’d take Tony’s taunts any day. Speaking of which, here it comes: “Sounds like your love life, doesn’t it, Probie?”
“I wouldn’t talk, Tony.” Always better to get on the offensive.
Tony laughs. “I have a date this weekend, Probie.” Walked right into it.
“With Cindi?” This is a game McGee is getting good at. “She called my extension by mistake. I told her you would be very busy this weekend. She said you better call her and make it good.” Tony is reaching for his phone. Time to move in for the kill. “But, she said not to call her at her usual number.” Tony looks at him expectantly. “I don’t have her number, someone took my pen.”
“Aww, c’mon McGee . . .” He knew Tony knew his name.
Gibbs smacks them both on the back of the head. “We have work to do.”
McGee has been told that a partnership is like a marriage.
His parents’ marriage was nothing like any of these relationships.
Maybe he should start seeing Ducky too.
